I have overclocked my Q6600 to 3.0GHz @ 1333MHz on stock auto voltage and my Corsair Dominator XMS2 DDR2 PC2-8500 RAM to 800MHz on 2.225 volts. I also have an Abit IN9-32X-MAX mobo and set the N/B Strap to 1066MHz or default. But everytime I run Prime95, I would fail after about 6-7 hours into the tests. I've tried raising the VCore up to 1.32 volts but then I would fail Prime95 within the first hour. Same with any VCore voltage settings between stock auto at 1.28-1.32. I'm totally stumped on why I keep failing Prime95. I can play games like Battlefield 2142 just fine for hours with no problems, but I just can't seem to pass the Prime95 Stress Tests. Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong, or suggest anything that might help me out?

EDIT: I just want to have a rock solid stable system.

Sounds like it needs more voltage. Auto should range up to a little over 1.35.

FYI these quads are rated for 0.85V - 1.5V and still warranty :rockout:

Q6600 G0 Intel Processor Spec

I'd say raise the voltage and watch the temps....

It also sounded like you could drop the voltage on the memory. That stuff should run ddr800 4-4-4-12 @ like 2.0 V. But if they aren't getting too warm you don't really need to worry.

Good luck :toast:

OK just upped to VCore upto 1.35 and the RAM down to 2.20. Gonna go run Prime95 and see what happens within the first hour. I'll keep you updated. Thanks!

EDIT: BTW, my CPU temp at idle is around 16 degrees celcius, and around 34 on full load.

Oh shit, those temps are way low.
Crank that thing up to the highest voltage you're comfortable with...

I'd run 1.4V, & try 400Mhz FSB. Then run the RAM at 1:1 (ddr2-800) at the lowest stable timings (I got 4-3-4-6 on my dominators). I always seem to get a little boost from running at 1:1...

:toast:

edit: LOL just noticed it was a 680i board. You might have a little trouble getting to higher FSB's, but 400 should be within your range

My temps are that low because I have a liquid cooling system for my CPU.

BTW, I just ran Prime95 and it found a hardware error within the first 5 minutes. Had better luck on auto VCore settings.

EDIT: You sure to run the RAM at 1:1 cause I have it unlinked at the moment?

Where u getting those temps from?
If you using speedfan they are wrong... you need to use Coretemp for Quads (incase you diddnt already know)

heres a link: http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

It just sounds wrong because to have an idle of 16c you would need to have a room temperature of about 14c and I very much doubt you have that. Speedfan will give you much lower temps than what you actually have

I'm running Everest Ultimate and Core Temp. They both read the same same thing for each core. But Everest gives you an estimate on the overall CPU temp. It's not really 16 at idle, it's more like between 16-20 at idle.

cool well as long as you got the temps right as if you got them wrong you could have been crashing due to temps... but i doubt it as i run mine 3.4ghz 24/7 with no heat issues...

wow i just read you have TEC cooling... well then that explains it :)

depending on your LC system, I run mine 24/7 @ 1.415 (0.005 Vdroop modded :)) 400x9 and my idle is low/mid 20's, load is up into the 40's (which is fine)

My room temps swings from mid 80's in the summer to mid 60's in the winter :(

you might need a notch or 2 over 1.4 to get prime stable...but not so sure with the 680i boards....couldn't even get one to OC a g0 to 333 fsb it was obnoxious

Yeah my system wouldn't even POST after trying those settings.

Should I disable all the CPU features? Because that's what I've been doing and this time around after resetting the CMOS I left them to auto or enabled.

Mine does exactly the same thing, runs games fine but fails prime 95. I just leave it at the max stable overclock/voltage for games.

Yeah, I just set the VCore voltage to 1.30 and was playing Battlefield 2142 for 4 hours straight with no problems. Gonna run Prime95 tonight while I sleep just to see if it'll pass this time around.

I had a bugger of a time with my Q6600 G0, and a 680i board (from ASUS...P5N32-E SLI).
Wouldn't even pass post above 2.9GHz no matter what I tried (voltages, lowering the multi, etc)
I did some research on the web, and found that BIOS for my board released after April 2007 all seemed to have this issue with overclocking the Q6600.
Flashed mine back to (for my board) v.1103 (released before April 2007), and made 3GHz stable without issues.

Not sure if your board has the same issues but worth looking into.

Could be the 680i and Quads are known not to like each other. Not always though I have seen them around 3.8ghz on a 680i, but I know for a fact the x38, P35 will clock a quad much higher.

Problem may be unfixable if your BIOS doesnt properly recognise the Q6600 G0, since if its not recognised, there is no micro-code patch. No Intel or AMD CPU is happy without the microcode patches.

 sorry..hope it didn't cause headache or hardship :p

For you cpu settings, idk that it really matters. I've READ (but not experienced) that the C1E and speedstep and that BS doesn;t play nice with overclocking...but if you're not experiencing an issue, I wouldn't worry.

Think of it this way. If you leave it on and it works, your PC will run cooler and consume less energy when idle...both good things :D

With your setup, I would say you're done w/ cpu overclocking, and probably pretty happy at 333x9.
Next step is to tweak the memory out. Get that stuff cranking and then run memtest (bootable floppy 4 me...if you have a floppy, if not bootable ISO). Tighten the timings and re-try. If thats the 'older' 1066 Dominators, they'd have D9 chips and should clock pretty good. 4-3-4-6 @ 400mhz is where I quit, I think they would run around 980 @ 4-4-4-12, but wouldn't do 1000 at anything under CL5 (at spec'd voltage).
You might get a little boost out of yer rig tweaking that out...I'd be careful with over-volting though....I've HEARD (again not experienced) that too much voltage doesn't make them fail immediately...I was told they die slowly (in weeks without active cooling) at like 2.4V

Good luck & have fun ;)

I would definately disable them except for PECI (internal thermal temp monitor) and see if that helps your stability issues.

C1E / Speedstep is going to cause issues as this will lower your multi / FSB while your processor is idle... and then raise it again automatically when you start doing something... this will probably causes instability at a high overclock.

IDK...333 FSB is by no means a high overclock. His board actually supports dual core processors where the FSB is 333 (...E6850...)

Now with my setup at 400FSB, you may be right...

I don't think he'll see a problem at his 'lower' FSB...I say leave it and save the planet

Still doesn't explain why its NOT prime stable, but he can play games all night...

2142 used to be a good game to check stability...not so much anymore...load up COD4 or Crysis and try those for an hour or two...Both crash my system (in the summer) after about 2 hours b/c of excessive gfx heat...I have to remove the chassis side panel in the summer

Good luck

Could run some Folding@home if you want to check your cpu stability, it requires very precise and accurate calculations, if that screws up you're not completely stable.

Hi, try this to get stable ^^ hope u can get stable like me. here we goo....

CPU operating system : Linked
Fsb (QDR) : 1333
Fsb (memory ratio) : 3:2 = 888 mhz (good temp n performance)
nb strap : psb 1066
For the PCIe : set all to Auto

ADVANCE BIOS SETUP
CPU FEATURES : DISABLED
ENABLED
DISABLED
ENABLED
DISABLED
ENABLED

MEMORY TIMING
TCL : 5
TRCD : 5
TRP : 5
TRAS :15
CMD :2T
SLI BROADCAST : DISABLED
LDT FREQUENCY : 4X
NVIDIA GPU EX : ENABLED
LINKBOOST : DISABLED
ECC CONTROL : AUTO
ECC UNCORRECTABLE : DISABLED
ECC CORRECTABLED : DISABLED

and about the voltage leave everything standart and just change the core voltage to 1.340v. with this setting i got stable 24 hours n hope u got the same. dont change ur nb / sb voltage if dont have any good cooling for ur northbridge and southbridge coz this mobo not good temp for both of them. n leave the memory voltage to standart at 1.850v. all finish. try it n please report to me what u got. c ya n thx

Could be the 680i and Quads are known not to like each other. Not always though I have seen them around 3.8ghz on a 680i, but I know for a fact the x38, P35 will clock a quad much higher.

All nforce type mobos are such for quad. if u wanna playing overclocking, P35 type is better! but the P35 type not support sli but support crossfire. (still waiting when the AMD ATI radeon beat nVidia vga card n go for crossfire :D)

for me, if u can play game for 6 hours or little bit longer than that n playing without crash at one hours its seem u dont need to care about prime95. playing game u didnt make the proc + memory work as high as u test prim95. ngok ngok^^. i wanna move to AMD ATI but nVidia still the beast! BUT the price are to HIGH...Arggg..!!! thats make me wanna move to ATI but waiting till ATI can beat the 9800x2 hahahaha.
