Samsung to Launch Super Fast 256GB SSD Later This Year

Samsung late on Sunday announced definite plans to launch a breathtakingly fast flash memory-based solid-state disk that's also world's first to boast a 256GB capacity. Samsung's multi-level cell (MLC) based SSD, which was unveiled in prototype form during the company's fifth annual Mobile Solution Forum event in Taipei, has a 2.5-inch form factor and SATA 3.0 Gbps interface. It is only 9.5 mm thick, and measures 100.3x69.85 mm. Sequential read/write speeds for this drive are also something that's worth noting: 200MB/s read and 160MB/s write, or roughly 2.4 times faster than a typical HDD. In addition, the drive offers a sophisticated data encryption process that prevents data stored on the SSD from being accessed in an unauthorized manner, even after the SSD is removed from the PC. Samples of the drive will be available to customers from September with mass production due by the end of the year. A smaller 1.8-inch version of the 256GB SSD is also expected to be available in the fourth quarter of this year.

I would to get a SSD for my laptop, since im still on 80gb getting 100Gb+ would be a great addition to my spec if the price was right. good thing prices are still on the drop so we wont have long to wait

I wonder how effective a set of these would be running in Raid 0. I'm pretty sure they have a low chance of drive failure and what not so it should be safe and damn fast. All you would need is many thousands of dollars to do it

This time it is the high end and enterprise praised IOP341. With an uncapped controller we should theoretically be at 1100 MB/s sustained read right now which would un-cork an additional 300 MB/s out of our current setup. The article will have to suffice with only 830 MB/s sustained read.

I don't worry about capacity because I could always RAID them up for size and speed!

I'm actually putting in an order right now for some new hard drives for my system. Couple 750's and 4 250's, and it's coming to $575. That's like one 32GB SSD

and just where did you pull that from?

modern flash drives do not have this limitation... you're probably too young, but were you aware first gen magnetic hard drives had a very limited amount of write operations, just like early flash? Modern hard drives have limits too, they just have a huge number. These flash drives will thousands upon thousands of operations, even if we have no specific amounts in the specifications.

In 5 or 10 years it would bee as cheap as nowadays HDDs
And capacity and speed would bee exponential I think in SATA III or SATA IV 12Gbit/s or even faster, in case file transfer maybe 500MB or 600MB/s! longer operational life!

Uses less energy, no moving parts, no noise
Yepp hope in 2009 or 10 I can buy one at the right price/GB

well the only ones ive found remotely affordable are 8-16gb

just a thought but say i wanted to buy one of these small drives what would it be best for ? a windows drive? or maybe a few programs/games ?

good luck with that last time i looked crysis was 6gb and stalker was 3.2gb :laugh:

qalthough noticed on the smaller drives i was looking it they have horrible read/write speeds around 56/32mbps

yeah but you're stuck at 4GB maximum, compared to 256GB

the I-ram is sexy fast, but 4GB makes it hard to install anything beyond one modern app/game. (XP on its own, barely fits)

RAID two together and put ur OS on it and use another disk for page file and apps.

I want a couple of them too... a new one is coming soon that is SATA 3 and will hold more RAM

they said that about the DDR2 flavour which never occured... you sure its SATA 3, or DDR3?

The problem was the original model used the PCI slot, which meant it at least had standby power when the PC was off - so you didnt lose your data. The DDR2 flavour used 5V power, so when the PC goes off... so does your data.

no matter how big or fast they get, it still sucks that you lose your data when the system goes off.
