Hi guys,

I have the opportunity to refresh one of my old rigs and I got an offer about two low-end cards, and I can't make up my mind.

First one is:

OEM GT640 with specs:

28 nm / PCIe 3.0/
  • Pixel fill rate: 12.8, Texture fill rate: 25.5
  • Bandwith 28.8- DDR3 - 4GB
  • 128 bit
  • 50W
  • Single slot with PWM control fan

Second one is:

Palit (Rev.2) GT640 with specs:
28 nm / PCIe 2.0/
  • Pixel fill rate: 8.37, Texture fill rate: 33.4
  • Bandwith 40.1- DDR5- 1GB
  • 64 bit
  • 49W
  • Dual slot with no PWM control fan

I checked RCoon's article about bandwith, but in this particular case is it really that important?

DDR5 should be double the bandwidth of DDR3, but it has only 1Gb vram, 4Gb is pretty much useless on a card of that vintage and speed.
Tough call but I think if it was my choice I would go for the Palit GT640, slightly better texture fill rate and bandwidth.

Also weird that they make GT640's with 4GB vram, how can you ever use that 4GB with such card?

I would go for the Palit as well.

I missed some info, I just added. Sorry about that. Yeah, I agree- 4GB on a gt640 is kinda of a joke. One more thing though, the OEM is the cheaper than the two.
