1600X to 5600(X)

Hello !

Even if I'm still fine with my 1600X/1080 for 1440p gaming, I was considering getting the 5600 since it should work on my X370.

I know the jump wont be that great especially on a 1440p monitor with a 1080 but I dont need/want to upgrade first gen AM5 later (even if X370 was great, I prefer to avoid mem/high freqs issues) + I guess upgrading my GPU will be more important in 1 or 2 years

The only worthwhile upgrade is a 5800x3d as you will likely be keeping it for years.

Otherwise wait for Raptor Lake or Zen 4.

If the mobo supports it grab a 5800 oem, go as far as you can with AM4

The title says 5600X, but the thread says 5600, which is it? The 5600 is a better buy, for me it is between the 5600 and the 5700X (if you do any productivity work), but if you're fine right now, then why rush to purchase? Once AM5 releases, used Zen 3 CPUs will only get cheaper (though possibly not the 5800X3D due to rarity and being the top CPU).

Absolutely. If the CPU becomes some kind of limiting factor by then I'd imagine you're going to be able to find a cheap 5700X or something like or you'd just switch to AM5.

The 5600 is particularly still not a bad choice, at all. Especially if you already have a board to make it work with. Prices are bit lower right now in the U.S, a new setup with a 5600 + better-than-intel cheap grade AMD board costs up to $100 less from PCPP down this segment. It also doesn't have an autistic old Turbo Boost 2.0 algo where only one core shoots to 4.4 Ghz and the rest scramble around 4 (12400F). I'd grab it personally.

How is it not a worth while upgrade. The 5600X is on average 25-30% faster than the 1600X in gaming test. That's a large leap for only $199 or even better $299 for a 5700X

Yeah the first gen wasn't much special. They were decent CPUs but got beaten by Intel, HEDT, etc. It was the later stuff that improved on not only gaming but also down to instruction sets.

Yep I went from a 1700X to a 3600X and noticed before lows alone in gaming not to mention avg. Than went to the 5600X and now finally on the 5800X

Not sure where OP is located, but Newegg has the 5600X and 5800X on sale for 226.99 and 328 respectively.

Unless it's a 500 series motherboard, I would pay less and go for the Ryzen 5500. I just tested one last week and it's quite a good CPU, easily tunable to over 4600MHz using PBO and a small base clock bump.

I'm voting to upgrade to 5600X. You will definitely feel the performance, but this is the first generation you have, I don't know why they stated above that only worthwhile upgrade is 5800X3D to be profitable. Just take that 5600X, the price is nice. It will be enough for your needs, as soon as you last on the first generation for so long. The 5600X is a great gaming processor and will be suitable for the rest of your stuff. Unless you're doing some hardcore work and need a surplus of cores, the 5600X for gaming has enough and is quite the standard for today's titles.

It's EU price, I don't mind spending more for the 5600X but the main goal is to get some PoV regarding a "cheap" and usefull upgrade

No brainer upgrade, I went from 2600X to 5600G which is a smaller jump and its a very nice upgrade.

I noticed you got some replies saying no, I think they looking at it from a 6 core vs 8 core thing and as if you had no budget limits, but your question as I understand it is compared to the 1600X, it will be considerably faster.

Doesn't matter if you don't have a RTX 3090. You'll still see a FPS gain in CPU limited areas especially in the 1% Lows which is honestly the most important thing to look at. As that dictates how smooth the gameplay will be. You can average 100 FPS but if the lows drop to 30-40 your gameplay experience will suck.

Yeah but those tests were done with 500 series boards and PCIE 4.0 devices.

OP has X370 PCIE 3.0 so the only advantage is more cache.

I'll have to show you the benches of this little 5500 I ran last week when I get a minute. It's quite fast, on the heels of my 5800x.

+1 for a 5800X3D or a 5700X if you're going to be keeping it for a while. Moar threads and cache, better mins. You can also get some good deals on used 5800x on ebay too

You do realize the board has no effect on CPU performance at all right. It has even been shown PCIe 4.0 doesn't offer much more performance over PCIe 3.0 until you hit high end GPUs

Don't think every chip will hit those speeds, you look to be running a Taichi board, top grade RAM, cooling... no doubt it looks like a fine chip for the cash, though.
