I've been on/off looking for a large notebook for my father in law for the past few years, always waiting for AMD to catch up with the mobile CPUs, but realized something was off today after I found exactly one 17,3" unit, and with Zen 3 CPU only on top of that.
I always simply filtered everything from Lenovo (that's the brand I'm sticking with for a few years now), 17 or 17,3", Ryzen 5 or 7. I played around with the filters a bit and got tens of results going down to 16", and obviously Zen4 models among them.
Did I miss anything important? Large screens are not a thing anymore? What weird shit!

They are still out there but not sure large screens on laptops ever really were that popular when compared to 14 - 15 inch models. I sure like the 17" screens but I don't lug my laptop around all the time. In fact, 99% of the time, it sits at home, plugged in.

We have to remember that laptops are primarily for "road warriors" and folks who need to lug their laptops from class to class, or home to work to home every day - or worse, through airport security. For those users who want a bigger screen, they can, and many do, just connect an external monitor.

Hi,
Yeah I would of preferred a 15-16" but ended up with a 17" acer nitro amd 7840hs/ 4060 because the 15.6" in my price limit was a 7735hs/ 4060 and 200.us more lol

a quick search showed me 117 17 to 17.9" models released in 2023 with a ryzen CPU.

It's harder to find a backpack for a 17"+ laptop. And, it is hard to make a 17"+ laptop fit on a commercial flight. Since a commercial flight requires it to be hand-carried and cannot be checked due to the battery, the market and demand is restricted.

Since a laptop is portable by design, larger laptops will always have less demand overall.

Manufacturers make and market what sells.

Hi,
I didn't have any issues finding a back pack airport certified for 17" lappy but op is in a different region.
Laptop is long yes but width wise not a lot.

In psychological terms - that's called having a cognitive bias:

It's quite ironic since we live in the era of information. Tho, some studies claim - that to be one of the reason: there's simply to much information out there - thus, having an objective perspective can take some time - while trying to assess the available empirical evidence. Which is why, quite a lot of people - prefer to check one source and make a judgement based on what they found the first time they tried. Others don't even bother to do any research - instead they draw a conclusion/assumption - while taking into account what they already know (as limited as that may be - as influenced by their human condition). And thus - one could conclude that all women are evil (taking into account a bad experience with just one or two), or that iPhone is the only smartphone worth buying - and focusing only on information which enforces their belief, or... as it's the case with the topic at hand - filtering the search results to 1 brand and a Zen 3 CPU - on some local site - and then reaching that conclusion.

While in reality - checking one of the major sites - while filtering the same brand and also a 17'' display but not a specific CPU model - one could find 47 results (and this are just Lenovo)

That being said, YES - Laptops with 17'' - 17.9"" Displays are still a thing. You just have to expand your search - maybe check a bigger IT store, other bands, other CPUs - even do some research and see what's currently popular and why.

If you do any kind of professional work like CAD/CAM, Biotech, Image processing etc, a larger screen will probably be your best choice, even when you have large monitors to plug them into...

Personally, with doing CAD work, there is no way in hades I could ever tolerate working on a puny 14" or 15" screen, and I do have 3x large monitors (2x 32" + 1x 48") to use with my 18" slab monster, but even so, I gotza have dat space man... but OTHO, I don't have to lug it around anywhere either, so there's that :D

I dont have any issue in finding a good 17in laptop bag, I still carry my laptop and some clothes and it fits in the personal luggage size.
But I should be downgrading to a 16in laptop early next year, I can fit a bit more clothes. I get flight benefits (free flights) where I work at but I still have to pay for checked luggage.

What? You put a laptop in an overhead carry-on bag? That's crazy. I only ever put one in a backpack which will fit under a seat. And as such, good luck with a 17+" laptop. I have done it. It's no good. They harass you constantly that the backpack is sticking out too far and preventing rapid evacuation.

I stopped buying large laptops for this reason alone.

You are placing a laptop inside an overhead bin carry-on? How? Why? When the bins are full, what do you do? You insist that you have no other option and someone else's bag should be put below? Screw that.

If you need one, there's just no way around it. But for myself, I already went the "laptop powerhouse/replace desktop" route once and never again. You just can't get the rendering/GPU performance of a desktop in a laptop. The only exception would be, for example, when it comes to rendering, you could have a server set up at home to handle it while working remotely from the laptop. Nevertheless, lots of extra money vs. just using a proper desktop.

Why did I even consider the idea of people reading past topic titles...

Hi,
lol
Yeah frankly expanding your brand might help get more results or contact Lenovo and say their line ups sux for a long long time

I guess it's a matter of compactness. I have a 15.6" laptop in the firm, but I work on an external 27" monitor anyway. If I have some work to be done at home, I'll just connect to my own monitor. 17" is still not big enough for an only display, at least for me.

Yeah, no. Unlike with other brands, I'm most happy with Lenovo and don't plan to switch anytime soon. It's also much more comfortable to manage one ecosystem. I just need my wife to decide on new work notebook so that piece od shit Dell junk leaves the household.

Hi,
Yep I had a little acer mini desktop from 2009 that was just retired a couple years ago so I just got a new laptop from them.
It seems very good so far after a clean install so hopefully it will last for a long time.
I was going to get an asus tuf laptop but didn't want to pay the asus tax of 200.us more

I put it in a backpack not carry on.
In order to get away with a large(r) backpack is hide it until the last minute and wait until ramp agent is busy then ask someone in line to cut in front of them, tell them the truth, that your backpack a little too large to fit and you'll get charged a fee. If someone says "no", ask someone else. I've travel enough to get it down to a science.

Screw that. I try to go through life making as little waves as possible. I stick by my statements. 17+" is too large for air travel.

Hi,
All it sounds like to me is your personal preference rather than anything enforced by tsa or abroad lol

It depends. I got a 16" laptop recently. I stacked my older 15" laptop on top, they were pretty much identical in size.

Hi,
Yep my "acer 17 nitro" is really a hair under 16" long and less than 12" wide.
So yeah only about 1" bigger than my old one it just doesn't fit the other backpack "easily" i could cram it in though.

It seems like 16" is taking over from where the 17" laptop once stood.
It never maid sense to me since it's not better than 15" or 17" for anything at all.
