so im curious if I can run 2 different sized sticks together

both 3600 cl20 sticks. different brands.

could I run them at xmp or abit below?

also, is there a heirarchy with ram brands?

and wth happened to muskin? they used to be the shet in the days? they have some ssd but otherwise they are way off the map

You CAN, but it’s not advisable generally. Mismatched sticks can cause various goody behaviors or… will work fine. It’s a complete coin-toss, but generally there is a reason why people run matched kits. I forget how the XMP works (if it even does) in this case - might be the lower profile of the sticks being available? I am genuinely unsure since it was… I dunno, almost 20 years since I attempted something like that.

There isn’t really a hierarchy - everything DDR5 will use Hynix chips anyway, Crucial being the exception. And all respectable vendors have lifetime warranty. One can argue about bins and such, but these days even GSkill Royals aren’t pre-binned, so… meh.

Mushkin are still alive, just unremarkable since everyone and their dog is releasing similar products.

Generally inadvisable - not only by the valid reasons @Onasi mentioned but also because in this scenario, 16 GB of the memory will end up accessed at single channel speeds. Performance won't be consistent, even if it works.

black friday sales are absolute garbage for the past few years. cant find a good 2x32 set and its cheaper for me to deliver 2 different shipments of 1x32 WITH shipping then a 2 stick set. but I have other things im looking to buy.

im going to try anyway.I have a fire extinguisher nearby haha

I would clear the CMOS and try it. It will let you know if it doesn't want to play nice.

Other than the issues that have already been mentioned, generally, the pc will only perform as well (or as bad) as the lowest performing stick will allow, so if you're not worried too much about performance, then it may or may not be an issue for you...

Personally, I ALWAYS run matching sticks regardless of brand, size or specs, but then again, I demand maximum performance from my machines & stick with top-tier vendors only, so there's that :)

On X58 I had all 6 DIMMS populated with 3 different makes and models haha.. could even OC it..

At the time, I also did not think this would be the last picture that I took of my X58 assembled as a system, and running

yea I dont mind just a bit lower speed if thats what it takes. when there will be a REAL sale, ill get the other 32gb stick. cheers

It's not optimal, but it'll work.

To be fair, the performance reduction only happens when the last 16GB are used. You have to fill up the first 32GB before then. So no rush until you use that much RAM enough to have that issue.
