Hope this is the right forum for this question but here it goes, I'm using a Dell Optiplex 980 as a media server with 3 ext drives e-f-g I can access all drives from 2 of my computers and plex on my phone, but with 2 more computers, I can't access drive "f" all others are fine but with "f" I get the "unable to access, you do not have permission" error? Tried joining/leaving homegroup option but the same thing happens. Can't seem to find a way to get it to work on all my computers? Any ideas I can try?

When you shared the drive, did you allow the same account you're accessing the file server with?

Do you have your file server shares setup using a specific account for accessing (like creating a Shares profile), does that profile have explicit access permissions to those shared volumes and directories? Or are you sharing all your stuff out to Everybody?

Not sure what your experience level with file sharing is but it seems you have a decent enough grasp on the concept to try some basic diagnostics...that said this link is helpful if this is still a newer concept for you...

Can you access the file server using UNC in Windows Explorer (i.e. \\fileserver instead of C:\program files)?

Does it ask for credentials when you do? Are you using the same access credentials from all PC's? Do you have the same share permissions or did you do a simple share setup?

I have to admit, my ability with advanced sharing is limited but I do have all 3 drives shared to everybody. It actually worked fine for quite a while with this problem popping up about a month ago. Going to check out the link you posted now. Thanks

easiest way to get filesharing to work correctly.
make sure you are using the same username/password on each system

open a cmd prompt on your workstation.
type whoami

it'll return something like this
C:\Users\slozo>whoami
gaming\slozo

In my case the username is slozo.
make sure the user slozo exists on the server
make sure the user slozo has full control of the filesystems that are shared
make sure the user slozo has full control of the share
filesystems and shares don't automatically line up so you will want to make sure that occurs.

Finally figured it out. All I had to do is rename the "f" drive and now it's accessible? 2 of the drives are WD my book units and were named "My Book" and "My Book 2" Don't know why but when I renamed "My Book 2" to Movies, it now works.
