Sorry ahead of time I am on my phone, big hands and little screen. Anyways I was playing BF1 last night and suddenly my screen went black and my lights flickered. Now I have power to the MB as I have a light indicating it but no fans and it wont boot. I tried the pin test and it still did not power the PSU on. Would you all agree the PSU died? It is 7 years old and has been through a number of builds. I just bought a 1440 monitor and that may have pushed my duel 390's to draw more power and finally kill it. At least that is my hope. Thank you in advance.

Lights flickered, do you mean the house lights or just those in the case?

The PSU should handle that load of the 390s without worry... even at 7 years old.

If the house lights flickered and the PC went down and won't come back up... it could be anything. The first thing I would check is the PSU. If it didn't jumper alive, then its likely the PSU.

If you haven't done so yet...

You can try unplugging it from the wall, cycle the power switch on the back of the psu, plug it back in and try to power it up again.

It's possible that the protection circuit in the psu is stuck and a full discharge may reset it. I've had this happen to me once on an old build of mine. Note that I did replace the unit afterwards as a precaution...

Not trying to be a dick here. I dont know how much you bought those 390s for but 1070s are faster, run cooler while drinking significantly less power from the mains. One 1070 is fine for basic 1440p and they tend to OC very well as a bonus. We're talking at least 170w difference per card which adds up to 340w less if you still wish to run two 1070s.

Having been used multiple generations of Dual GPu set ups. id rather have the 1 off uber powerful card to run my games then go back to a SLi or Xfire set up. the headaches were just too much.

1070s cost around the same as 390s but im not sure if the prices are the same where you are from. I suggest selling those 390s and getting a 1080 or 1080Ti when it comes out.

Also as another suggesting.... If your house or apartment tends to get a lot of 'brown outs' or powercuts -- consider investing in a good UPS by Cyberpower.

Not at all. I know a 1080 would be better but I had one 390 and my buddy sold me another for $115. Cant really argue that kind of price and they drive my new monitor. I probably should invest in a UPS. My surge protector is what is mandatory for all electronic equipment on Navy ships. Picked it up on a deployment. Thanks for the advice my next build will be single GPU

In the UK, a 1070 is about 400 quid, which is damn expensive.

For dual R9 390's and OC'ed CPU a quality 850W is bare minimum for my taste. On the other hand, dual R9 390's are more powerful than GTX 1080. I would suggest keeping them and getting Enermax Triathlor Eco 1000W / Lepa MaxBron B1000M or Enermax Platinax 1000W if money isn't a problem.

850W is plenty for 2 390s and an intel cpu...all overclocked.

I suggest evga g3 850w over what was listed. That 1kw eco... thing... $90??? Yikes.

The Lepa is a hunk of crap: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story6&reid=413

EVGA PSU's from "80 Plus Gold" standard and up are very good, but also very pricey and often more expensive than equally good competition. I would rather pick a cheaper Enermax or Lepa unit.
Lepa MaxBron's are OK. Maybe that particular unit that Johnny received was awkward, but gerenally they are good according to buyer's opinions and some other reviews. In short, they shine in their full brightness under heavy load. These units are enormously powerful, usually offering more power than equally rated competitor's units. They aren't among the best on the market, but they are certainly good enough for the average or advanced user.

Although a quality 850W PSU will suffice, I would recommend a 1000W unit for two power hungry R9 390's and Intel K CPU.

Actually, they are quite often CHEAPER than the same quality competition... You put it up against the trash you picked (except the Platnuimax), it it runs circles around it. I would NEVER trust my PC to a $99 1KW PSU.

Buyer's opinions don't matter at all. They don't TEST the units. Just because it works, doesn't mean you aren't playing with fire using a crappy PSU.

They do not offer more power than equally rated competitors units...

That Lepa is a hunk of trash. It wasn't a one sample deal.. it was garbage.

Im sure you, like all the others that don't know, would like 1KW unit for 2 390s and an Intel K. The reality is you don't NEED that at all. 850W is PLENTY to allow for overclocked both cards and the CPU to their ambient cooled limits. I ran a 295x2 (500W) overclocked on water and a 5820K at 4.5Ghz+ and hit around 750W at the wall (so around 675W actual).

I second an EVGA G3, right now the quality you get for the $$ is really high, at least in the US. UPS is definitively a good investment as well for you probably, I'd suggest a refurbished APC Smart UPS unit, they are built very well, parts are easy to get, sine wave, a decent quality $$ ratio again

@EarthDog: They aren't cheaper in Europe, that's for sure! That EVGA is undoubtedly a better unit than the two 80 Plus Bronze units I mentioned, but also more expensive. That's why I said if money isn't a problem buy Enermax Platinax, which is superior than EVGA G3. For average and even advanced users on the budget Enermax and Lepa PSU's I mentioned are fine.

For instance, a 700W Lepa MaxBron has an actual output of 696W, while majority of the competition are in the 630-650W range. Similar thing is with Lepa Maxbron 1000W. So yes, their actual output is higher than vast majority 80 Plus Bronze PSU's.

OC'ed i5 with two R9 390's, HDD, 2 x SSD, liuquid cooling (assumption), case fans and peripherals can pull up to 770W of power. My personal rule is to have at least 100W reserve above the maximum possible consumption; that's why I suggested a 1000W PSU.

I don't live in Europe. No clue where the OP lives.

Most modern PSU's have the VAST majority of their output on the 12V rail, correct. Cheap PSU's, do not (though that isn't always true). Again, that Lepa is a hunk of trash... enough about it.

The Enermax Plat. is only more efficient, not any better quality wise. Don't mistake efficiency for quality...thought both are great PSUs. To name one better than the other is splitter hairs indeed. But it is rated higher... ;)
Would you look at that... its rated higher!! Weird.......................................lol
http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story6&reid=494
http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story5&reid=282

The platimax is a $200 PSU here, while the 1000W G3, a slightly better PSU - though less efficient, is $150. Want Platinum and 1KW.. the EVGA is $190 here. A little less for slightly better (not like anyone would notice......... so why pay $1 more???).

I'd like to see you pull 770W of power with that setup.. did I mention I was full custom water loop... 5 fans? 2 HDDs, 1 SSD? There is well more than 100W reserve on an 850W PSU for that hardware. Again, a 295x2 overclocked to the max (500W card stock) and a HEX CORE Intel (uses more than the quad the OP has........) at 4.5GHz, I hit 750W AT THE WALL.

I purchased an EVGA 850. Luckily they had one at the big box store. I live in a remote area in the US and I was unwilling to wait for an e-retailer. All is in workung order now.

Nice, its worth any extra they cost anyway for the 10 year warranty

The way enermax have been going the past few years i would be concerned the company wouldnt last as long as any warranty they offer
