Will 1080ti bottleneck my i5?

16 gb dd4 2400mhz
500gb Samsung 850 evo ssd
980ti Asus reference
700w Silverstone strider PSU (with custom exstensions)
27" Acre predator 1920x1080 144hz gsync (XB270H)

I wanted opinions,if I now upgraded my card to a 1080ti and a 4K monitor will my CPU be good enough or will it bottleneck?

It's actually not that bad a tool, just a shame that you can only pick one clockspeed per CPU. I would have an 18% bottleneck with my current combo, but my i5 does run 4.4 Ghz right now... not 3.4

Ontopic: you're more than fine with that combo. Clock the i5 to 4.5 Ghz (which should be a breeze) and any potential bottleneck will be reduced to 2-3% max, which is negligible.

wow great tool, but the suggestions are out of place. I had a bottleneck theoretically and the suggestion was a laptop CPU. Other than that, it's a great idea.

EDIT: Also suggests DDR4, even though the platform does not support it.

I believe its useless, as mentioned above, because the suggestions are terrible right now. I also don't see the point of including a HDD or RAM frankly, when determining bottlenecks. HDD is slower than SSD.. derp. SSD is slower than PCIe NVME SSD... derp. It feels more like the Windows Experience Index 'score' from Windows, which was also pretty useless outside of setting up some parms for drives, etc.

Anyway, just not something I would use.

your setup should be ok. i would advise you to get the 4k monitor first and try it with your current gpu. if your processor is running in the 90-100% range while your gpu is at 100% you might try to overclock it and if that does not cut it than a new processor. if the processor is not struggling with the new monitor along with your current gpu and you dont like the 980ti than grab the gtx1080ti. this way you can avoid buying an awsome monitor and gpu only to find out that you will need to look into some overclocking or better processor. the monitor will probably stick around for a while so it would not matter if you get it now or a little latter down the road. because i believe in the long run you want a 4k setup.

The word "bottleneck" didn't even exist a few years ago. Two and even three generations old i5 CPU can certainly handle the most powerful GPU.

OT: whoever invented that reCAPTCHA with images deserves a powerful punch in the face. You select correct images and than it displays another set of images and after that another. It's ridiculous and time consuming.

Komi... go read some 2016 techspot reviews and see how even SB is putting a glass ceiling on high end cards in some titles...particularly at 1080p. It isnt micu, but its there.

In my opinion, it doesn't matter. I am just happy that SSD is beocming mainstream. Now, that was a real bottlebeck for most PCs.

According to that, my 3930k at 3.2 GHz won't bottleneck a Titan X.

And it's recommending I put DDR4 in my DDR3 system.

I don't think that CPU will be a problem. At 4K that 1080 Ti is going to be what will be limiting your FPS and not that CPU. For example in this review W1zzard is using a i7 7700k @4.8 GHz which is a little faster than your i5 6600k but not a lot faster and here are his benches in The Witcher 3

You see from the 1080p results that the i7 7700k is capable of feeding the 1080 Ti an average of 152 FPS but at 4K he only got 63 FPS. That tells me that the CPU was spending time waiting for the 1080 Ti to finally finish rendering a frame before sending data to the GPU to render the next frame so at that resolution I doubt your CPU will be a bottleneck. It probably will be underutilized if anything.

Well , when I play GTA V with mods, when a lot of explosions and things going on, my cpu usage can run to ~100% , noticing little fps drop with my GTX1070, my CPU runs at 3.6GHz, you can OC it. I would prefer an i7 for the 8 threads for a 1080Ti.

The threads really dont hold the gpu back.. its the game requiring the threads for other calculations is why it drops..

In that, if a title i play doesnt need more than 4 threads, having more wont help fps.

I learned about "data" bottlenecks way back in electronics tech school - and that was in 1971 - long before the PC or YouTube.

First known use of "bottleneck": 1854.

I agree with Earthdog and P4-640, it depends on the game. But it should be noted most games are heavily graphics oriented. So for the most part, the CPU mostly just hands off graphics tasks to the GPU. And it takes very little CPU horsepower to hand off tasks. There are exceptions of coruse. Some programs are very CPU intensive. But if my budget did not allow for a high end GPU and a high end CPU, I would compromise with the CPU and put my money into graphics (and RAM).

As for that bottleneck calculator, I think it is important to address drives and RAM. If you only have 2GB of RAM, that's going to be a bottleneck. If you only have a 5.4K RPM HD (as is common with most notebooks), that's going to be a bottleneck. 2GB of RAM will even bottleneck the OS. Add your security apps on top of that, even 4GB will be a bottleneck for many programs. And of course, a SSD, even a slow one, will run circles around the fastest HD.

But still, that bottleneck calculator is too basic to be of much use. It has very limited CPU and GPU options. If you are into on-line gaming, your ISP connection could easily be your biggest (smallest?) bottleneck. And I don't see the reason for 3 storage options. 2 maybe, but not 3.

I don't want to be rude, but my parents didn't know about each other at that time, so I wasn't even "planned" untill the first half of the 80's. Funny thing is that a few years ago, although the problem existed, hardly anyone talked about it in a way we are talking right now (CPU-GPU relation).

Sure we did, it's just that the market was much smaller. It has exploded the past few years because ... I honestly don't know.

Those who use an upper Phenom 2 X4/X6 or Core i5/7 2500,2600,2700, or better will be fine. Sothere is nothing to worry about with that 6600K.
