XMG's latest water-cooled high-end laptop has reached our shores, bringing with it a top-tier AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX and a full-power NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti. The sleek NEO 17 (M22) doesn't even need the optional Oasis LCS to put out full performance, yet offers even more with the Oasis attached, including nearly silent operation. We take an extensive look at the XMG NEO 17 (M22) and put it through the paces.

For $4,000... you should wait for 4090 laptops... just my two cents.

I expect it will match this, but you get the benefit of DLSS 3 frame generation at least.

Agreed. Dumping this kind of cash when the 4090 has already been announced and laptops with it are incoming seems rather odd.

Yep, Eluktronics already announced 4090 liquid cooled laptops are coming next month. Not sure why anyone would drop 4 grand on this.

I saw this on a few channels last year and now I've seen this review with teardown pictures I cannot believe how stupid it is.

"oh hey, the laptop's air cooler isn't big enough so we added external watercooling"

...and there's a vast amount of wasted space inside the chassis that could easily have been used for better air cooling.

”XMG's NEO 17 is a fantastic gaming laptop. You don't need the OASIS watercooler to get an amazing experience, but it does add to the NEO 17 a level of awesomeness that shouldn't be overlooked. I'm now left wondering; why don't more laptop makers do this”

To the reviewer on the question about why don’t more laptop makers do this (external water cooling), I think the answer is obvious.
1. Cost - Cost to implement the water cooling is not high, but there is a steep increase in price for consumers because of the “premium” specs and special cooling solution
2. Taking the the mobility out of a laptop, designed to be mobile. Sure you can decouple the water cooling system, but if I had to pay this much for a laptop with a separate water cooling solution, then I suggest just using the money for a laptop for mobility and the rest for an ITX gaming system.

So the bottom line is that this laptop will not sell well. If you cannot sell in high volume, why would other manufacturers want to go with the herd mentality?

Would be nice if new techpowerup notebook reviews having desktop caliber CPUs like Intel 139xxHX and AMD dragon range 7945hx processors get same review treatment in the CPU department like recent 13900k and 7950x3d like emulation, code compilation, tensorflow training, unreal engine 5, ycruncher, etc..
