Hello,

I am building a PC for a friend and I am a die hard AMD guy but this build has a 3080 Nvidia GPU and it has been NOTHING but problems. I thought everyone loved Nvidia because the lack of issues? Anyways im at my wits end and about 3 fresh installs away from chucking this card in a bonfire. Every time I install the newer drivers for my 3080 I get a black screen. When I try to install through geforce experience or stand alone drivers half way through install black screen. I have waited as long as an hour and nothing.

I am forced to hard restart in safe mode and ddu the drivers. If I install the drivers in safe mode it completely installs newest drivers and wants to restart. After restart its just a black screen forever. I have to hard restart in safe mode and ddu again.

I have tried both ways numerous times and even tried a fresh windows install. I have tried the previous 4 driver versions, all same result.

System specs are: MSI B550 Tomahawk Max Wifi 5700x3d MSI Gaming trio z 3080 10gb lhr Corsair gaming pro 32gb 3200mhz Corsair 750watt psu WD SN770 2TB NVME

I also have an RTX3080 and have had no problems with the card or drivers for the last 3 years, are you sure it isn't something else... ?

Honestly not sure, I can't get the dang thing to even install. Windows has the basic drivers installed from 2020, I think 470something. I can't get it to take ANY newer drivers via geforce, nvidia app, or standalone, and windows says it has the newest drivers when I try to install via device manager.

You might have a dead VRAM chip. Manufacturers often use oily dish rags as thermal pads, and GDDR6X gets very hot. Here's my MSI Ventus 3080 during cleaning, it was so bad that oil dripped into the PCI-e slot and memory started overheating, reaching 95-105°C in idle. People think that crypto mining killed those cards, in reality it was manufacturers cutting costs on important things. From what I read in many places, driver issues are often one of the first symptoms of memory problems.

any card that can't complete driver installation process is an automatic RMA in my book. Had a problem like that on r9 290 and it was a blown capacitor.

If you are using one port, try another. Maybe it has a bad DP port or bad HDMI port. Or maybe HDMI works but not DP. Or vice versa.

If it has a warranty, RMA it. If it doesn't have a warranty, try to get a refund from the seller. If those aren't options, try to make it work by trying different ports, cables, etcetera.

Think it could be the 750 watt psu? 750 is what the manufacturer recommends for minimum power but read somewhere if the psu is not enough you will have issues? One would think the drivers would still install and power issues would arise from gameplay?

No. Power draw when not running an intensive 3d application will be low. The power supply wattage won't matter at that point.

Is motherboard bios up to date?

You friggin genius!! I popped in a DP cable and had zero issues installing the drivers. Seems the HDMI works but did not like it during driver install, very weird.

Computers be doing computer stuff. If I got a penny every time something you least expect gave me weird issues...... You should always connect nvidia cards via DP anyway.
