I don't know about you but I'm not a big fan of the look, I prefer the platinum.

I'm a little curious about EXPO profiles, how many can a kit have? Like XMP is up to 3 profiles from manufacturer.

I want to see kits advertised as range of speed that come with more than one profile. So instead of this being a 6000 kit, advertise it as a 6000-6200 kit.

There is space for 5 in total, EXPO or XMP. 3x XMP can be seen by Intel with 2 extra being "user profiles" that not all motherboards will see or support. I have seen 2x XMP and 2x EXPO show up on a Intel and AMD.

Ah so it's the exact same. I just recently learned from the forums that Patriot is the only brand supplying 3 preset profiles I believe. As big as Corsair has become you think they'd give you 3. Guess not.

@Upgrayedd I get it if a brand has both XMP and EXPO. Not enough space for 3 each, but in this case, its only EXPO.

That would be nice, but doubtful it would ever happen. This would reduce the number of marketable SKUs, and would likely reduce markups/margins as they go up in speed bins, or make kits more expensive in general.

When the entire PC industry is about providing an unnecessary alphabet soup number of models to wring every last cent out of the consumer, it just seems like wishful thinking.

@ir_cow

Any possibility of including min FPS tests in overclocking sections? There are certain RTS and MMO style games that often have massive benefits (going from 40>60 or 60>80fps in heavily CPU bottlenecked environments); while hard to benchmark I think there would be value in providing this sort of data to users as there can be a lot of performance left on the table.

Also, regarding overclocking sections, have you thought of including trfc and trefi tuning? For most kits/builds reducing the awful xmp/expo refresh window can have good benefits with minimal tuning investment.

The Kingston Fury Renagade XMP set I have has three profiles included. They're about a year old now.

The 99th is the is 1% lows. I agree RTS and MMOs are often much more CPU bound, they are a bit harder to test. MMOs are impossible to benchmark properly due to being an online game. How good is FF14 benchmark tool anyways compared to in-game? does it tell you anything useful? also do you have a RTS in mind that doesn't already hit a billion frames?

Yes I have, but where to start? Just do those two and leave everything else on EXPO/XMP? The combinations are a lot. Can you even change the tREFI on AMD? For the OC section, I just change the easy stuff. Primary's, tFAW, tRFC and tREFI if possible. But not sperate in different charts.

Must have turned my brain off, didn’t acknowledge the 99th percentile while scrolling through.

I’d have to think about RTS games; I’ve just recently being comparing minimums on my 7900X3D and 14700k with a variety of memory configs (WoW & GW2), depending on cpu settings and memory speed/timings you can end up with 30-40% more minimum FPS in relatively similar populated areas between restarts. Still they remain hard to test. Maybe that new City Simulation game? I can’t think of the name.

Most every b650 and X670 board should allow primary, secondary, and tertiary timings to be manually entered including trfc and trefi. Your primary timings and trfc/trefi just end up being the easiest gains and shouldn’t require excess testing like say messing with tfaw, trds, trrdd etc. Currently AMD doesn’t use trfc2 or trfc4 to the best of my knowledge.

I guess an example for AM5 would be to enable the Expo profile, not touch anything but trfc (whatever value corresponds to 140ns @ the kits mt/bin for a-die (170ns for m-die), and setting trefi to 50000 which shouldn’t tun into any heat related issues at 1.4v and under depending on the kits profile. Those trfc minimums are both safely above the average minimum values for both a and m die hynix.

Setting the values isn't the issue here. Just the time invested. At at certain point it just becomes the CPU/MB combo.

I'm also pretty sure tREFI can't be set on AMD. I'll look again.

tREFI and trfc4 cannot be set
trfc2 can be set

Edit: tREFI can be set
trfc2 is exposed in ryzen master
tREFI is exposed only in the BIOS

The example trfc and trefi I gave are pretty fool proof if using hynix a or m-die.

Trefi can definitely be set, and is recommended as the first thing to change when memory overclocking for AM5 atm.

*You can manually enter all the settings shown in Zen Timings in the bios except the ones crossed out

trfc_sb (may or may not be equivalent to trfc4 from what I understand) can be changed but can be set to any number as can trfc2 and does not seem to do anything.

tREFI is not in the BIOS. Are you setting it through Ryzen Master?

tRFCSB is single bank refresh if your wondering.

I don’t own a master but it should absolutely be in the bios; gigabyte is notorious for coming up with their own naming schemes.

Should be under this menu on the tweaker page in the advanced bios mode.

$295-$310 for this kit ($4.60/GB) makes zero sense when you can get the Corsair Vengeance 96GB DDR5-6000 CL30 kit for $365 ($3.80/GB)

The 96GB isn't EXPO but 50% more RAM at the same primary timings trumps the minor timing advantages of EXPO.

I love Corsair RAM but only the cheap stuff which has all the advantages of being good value and having a reputable global support/RMA offering. Dominator is just stupidly expensive and never ever worth it. For almost anyone in any situation with any budget, the money wasted on Dominator RAM is much better spent elsewhere.

If you already have a 7950X3D with a custom loop on a $1000 X670E board with a 4090, two Ferraris, a Koenigsegg, and a helicopter - then sure, buy some pointlessly overpriced Dominator RAM just so you can say you have fancy RAM because you're unable to stomach buying peasant RAM with your monocle and top hat.

I buy Vengeance LPX 6000 CL30. it's basically the same speed, but about half the cost despite having the exact same warranty/support. Why on earth would you just throw away money on a label that gives you absolutely nothing at all?

The cheapest 64GB 6000 CL30 kit I can find is $190. That is quite a bit of savings. So the question becomes why do people buy sports cars and go the speed limit?

Certainly from a value perspective enabling EXPO and off you go isn't there. But maybe you like the look, or whatever it may be.

With AMD-focused EXPO kits, you're limited by the IMC so I would hope that all of the additional cost, binning, and SPD configuration would go into tighter timings, which this kit doesn't have; It's the exact same generic CL30 timings as the cheapest kits on the market.

This kit is actually tightened up from the cheapest sets. The $200 kits are 30-40-40-96. (source: I just bought one). Wouldn't be worth the extra $110 for me, but for those that don't want to spend the time tuning a bit, it might be.

Next round of CPUs (Zen5). Need a 2-slot B650 Tachyon or ASUS X670 Gene. I have neither and they are already out of production

I've got G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB 6000 CL30 on my board and it's current 210 USD (roughly) which generally tests better than the Corsair and it's 2/3 the price.

What am I missing if I am not trying to squeeze out everything the chip lottery might afford me.

edit - don't roast me, just educate me if I am missing something.

I know the Gigabyte BIOS well :) Some investigation into this, it seems both Gigabyte and ASRock didn't have it at a launch. MSI and ASUS did. At some point over the course of a year Gigabyte as included tREFi. I just didn't look for it again knowing it wasn't there in the first place. Well it seems now I can do some extra tweaking. Still can't go below tRFC 400 or it hard locks and requires CMOS clear.
