Given these drives seem to top at around 300MBps for reads and 70MBps for writes, seems like the USB 3 5Gbps is more than enough. If you want faster drives there are drives which can deliver faster read/writes and even ones that can saturate 10Gbps USB 3.1 port.

I think I have a samsung USB stick like the one in the 3rd pic, the shape is bad as it prevents having another device in a neighbouring USB port.

I think thumb drives are all pretty bad, they use the cheapest crapiest nand and controller available and normally can't even saturate a usb 2.0 connection, but these Samsung at least are slim and have a non nonsense design, their casing is fully metal so it can dissipate some of the heat and though not particularly fast they're still plenty fast when compared to other flash drives. I don't spend my time benchmarking usb sticks but I have a couple of these from samsung sold as usb 3.1 and I think I was able to do around 80MB or something - again not fast but compared to other drives than don't break above 10MB it's pretty good.

They were already selling this as usb 3.1 which is the same thing as usb 3.2 gen 1 that they're selling now, I guess the marketing department has to keep busy somehow

I use a 16GB Sandisk with that speed level to boot my server. It's USB 2.0 era but you know it's gotta be good when the price is competing with the usual options. It's probably fine for large files but seems to be a nuisance for tons of tiny files that end up as allocation filler.

If anything ever prompts me to use that drive in something that can take advantage of its real speed, it's not life changing but a welcome improvement.

Either way, these make for great gifts.

I have the 256GB BAR Plus; best thumb drive I ever had.

Same have been using mine almost daily for 4 years, great drive. Seems like it would be cool if that capacity got updated but maybe there is just nothing to really update.

Write speeds are very sad. Basically decent hdd levels. I can get 100MB/s writes with crappy portable drive spinning at 5400rpm over usb 3.1.

Hard pass especially at this capacity.

I really like my 256GB Samsung BAR Plus in Titan grey, but for a 512GB USB drive I went with the SanDisk Ultra Luxe as the SanDisk was significantly cheaper ($40).
