Technology giant Hitachi has announced that it plans to stop selling personal computers to the public, instead choosing to concentrate on other areas such as computers specifically for the broadcasting industry. It will continue to manufacture and sell business computers and will still offer support to any customers who own Hitachi PCs, with the models launched this summer to be the last available on the market. Hitachi has struggled to compete with firms such as Dell and HP, shipping just 134,000 home-use PCs in Japan during the fiscal year leading up to March 2007. Hitachi may also consider selling its hard drive unit soon following losses every year since the company bought the business from IBM for $2 billion in 2002.

I seriously thought Hitachi made cheap DVD players and nothing else -- did they only sell computers in Japan? If so, I wonder if they were made in Japan and not China... might've been worth it.

Really? They're one of the biggest hard drive manufacturers in the world - up there with companies like Western Digital and Seagate. Admittedly they have diversified into a very wide range of industries, to quote my source:
Hitachi, whose businesses range from rice cookers to nuclear power...

Okay, you got me -- cheap DVD players and hard drives. :p I think I was just in shock about hearing of a company like that make full PC's and selling them, and never even seeing one of their models before.
