why does guru3d tell me/us that they cant clock the msi lightning gpu to more than 975mhz even with volt upper? is this bullshit?

here.. http://www.guru3d.com/article/msi-r5870-lightning-review/24

guru3d= ---As you can see, the R5870 Lightning can overclock higher, now we where hoping to pass 1 GHz, as that is some sort of personal goal I had. Unfortunately our sample could not pass 1000 MHz without running into problems. We fired off extra cooling, voltage changes, still not possible.--

we also have a review of that card you know, first result on google, not hard to find

probably a bad sample!
mine clocks well with a little bump:1.174v (stock=1.164v)

so guru3d got a "bad" sampelt then... it make no sence... single stoch 5870 clock well to 1000 and obove... i Love techpowerup. but sometimes i just sjeck out guru3d... but guru3d review makes the 5870 look like a bag of shit wen they tell people that this 5870 does not clock over 1ghz mark even with volt tweeks  ... but thay did say that usen nitrous nitrogen on the gpu, people reach 1400mhz core easy :rockout:
nice there pvhk :toast:

nice score there friend.. with an 4.25ghz quad and gpu 1.279v at 1050mhz :toast: ... is this 24/7 usage?

My ASUS can reach ~1050 with ~1.3v gpu.

Like its been said, not all GPU/CPU are the same. They all clock differently !

but remember the msi lightning is ment for clocking... with more xpensive parts on and a diff pcb.. the gpu should not differ.. the gpu render and uses the pcb componets to fastes bossible outcome

This is still allllllll about the GPU that it has in it. If you have a lucky bin your gonna clock to the sky. if not ... ....

the gpu is what it is... a lot of transinstors working together with the pcb for the fastest rout back to the cpu for reacognosion

yo look at this sick overclock with the msi lightnig 5870......... http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=245407
Well it is good but not very impressive.
Overclocking on extreme cooling is boring these days. Especially with cherry picked samples.

The guy only manage to get a little more than most 5870s on air.
That is 1100/1377 on air with its stock heatsink for the lightning.

That is what MSI say, but they still have the same cores as any other 5870s on the planet.
ATi sells these chips and MSI doesn't get to choose what they get ;)

As you can see only thing that any AIB guarantees is they are stable at their factory clocks with some head room.
Overclocking friendly is just as vague as it can be, a 10Mhz OC is still an OC.
