6800 reporting odd temperatures

At default clock speeds my 6800 had worked it's temperature up to 67 while at idle. When I overclocked it the temperature rapidly dropped to 48 degrees. This seems to defy common sense. It didn't do this when I first bought it. Any ideas on what is happening? GPU fan is at 100%.

Wow this is definitely weird. After the overclock are you seeing the performance boost? Maybe somehow your overclocking program is not doing what it says it's doing.

Also to check - does your temp return to 67 if you undo the overclock? Hehe maybe the heat from the overclock settled the thermal paste or something

I'm using ATI tool, and I do get a performance boost when overclocking. When I underclock the temperature also drops. I set it to default clocks again, and while it only reached 58 degrees this time the card is still cooler when overclocked. Maybe the Beta version is reporting the temperature wrong? The NV40 core is meant to run at 400Mhz, the vanilla 6800 is clocked by deafault at 325Mhz. Maybe it runs more efficiently at 400Mhz and above?

i dont think so.if its clocked at 325 it runs better at 325.my suggestion is to leave ATI tool and give it some o/c with coolbits.
