6800xt used for mining self-identifies as a 6900xt

I have a Radeon RX 6800 XT Phantom Gaming D 16G OC that I bought "refurbished" before I knew any better. Since I've had it, it has always been detected as a 6900xt, and I've come to realize that it must have been used for mining and a custom bios was flashed on it. It's been acting up lately, so I'm troubleshooting and I can flash stock bios for a 6900xt but not for 6800xt because the IDs don't match up.
Should I/can I change the ID to the proper one, or force flash 6800xt bios?

Before flashing the 6900xt bios, GPU-Z was simply blank in the bios field.

Update: with the 6900xt bios flashed, adrenaline won't load drivers. AMD compatibility tool says I have the right software, and windows can install a driver but the card still doesn't work and shows no stats regarding voltage etc in GPU-Z.

Force flashing is your only option, using command line amdvbflash 3.31. Btw your card should have dual bios'es, try to flash the other one first and see how it plays out.

Thank you for responding. I looked into the possibility of dual bios but I don't see a way to distinguish between them. Could you provide more info?

I don't think the PGs have dual bios, only the Taichis do.

My concern is: the card thinks it's a 6900xt, will force flashing 6800xt bios further worsen the situation if I can't let the card know it's a 6800xt? It's currently worthless so I feel like I have very little to lose, but I also have quite a bit to gain if I can somehow resurrect it

Would de-shrouding and later repasting and repadding the card be an issue to you? Some pictures of the naked hardware would give lots of answers.

I couldn't say 100%, just seems like a weird move to create stickers and sell as a lesser card

I was getting black and green screens under very little load/soon after booting. Now I'm getting nothing going to the monitor and the inability to load proper drivers

i don't know if your country has basic consumer protection laws but you should just get your money back without doing anything more to the card.

It took me a while to realize that I had a problem, so unfortunately I think I'm past any window to return the card. I'm up and running with a 3060ti so it's not the end of the world but if it were possible to salvage the 6800xt that would be cool

I'd get this thing (around 10 bucks worst case scenario; name: CH341A) and flashed the 6800 XT BIOS on top of that card. Or asked any reputable techie to do so.
