how would a 16x pcie video card running at 4x stack up against an agp card running at 8x?

if the same card is available in both pci-e and agp, then it is usually weak enough that putting it in a pci-e x4 slot won't affect it.

there is a nice article about how difference bandwidths affect high end graphics cards, for the purpose of graphics card you can assume pci-e x8 and agp 8x have about the same bandwidth

Depends on the card :).

Most cards dont see a difference between 4x and over. Its only the most recent cards (8800's/X1950's) which can see a bit of a difference from 4x to 8x.

Yup, i read that article, very good too,

I dk where i read but a 4x and 8x agp cards run no faster, and the 8800 series require the full 16x lane, so as they said, it mostly depends on the card.

I currently have a 8800 GTS running on my ASROCK 775-DUAL 880 PRO, and when i check CPU-Z it says my cards running @ 4 x PCI-e when max supported lanes are 16 x... i dont know if this affects preformance too much but i have had a 8800 GTX running in the same slot working fine aswell. not sure how this checks out but the cards did preform fine?

if anyone has any ideas on how to get 16x id like to know :->

Ps. Had a x850 XT PE before switching to a G80 which was at 8x AGP

Trust me, your G80 at 4x PCI-E beats the snot out of your X850.
That board won't do the full 16x, just support for 16x cards.

My MB has the option of changing the lane configuration to the PCIe slots in the BIOS. I can't promise you anything but it's worth a shot to snoop around and see if you have the same options.

Hmm, yes its seems that further research reveals that ASROCK and VIA cheaped out on the earlier mobos (im pretty sure newer ones dont have this problem) and just made some of them support 16x and run at 4x. Looks like i got another trip to the store soon :( LOL!

It isn't worth the reformat. You might get 2fps more.

by moving from 4x pcie to 16x pcie is a ~2fps ?

if so its hella not worth it.
