edit: I apologise but its a gainward 9600 GT 512mb DDR3

Thanks to anyone who is reading this. I recently built my first computer and I'm having trouble with my graphics card. Whenever I install the drivers for the card, the computer resets but then windows won't start up properly I get a blue screen telling me there is something wrong with my drivers. This also happens when I allow windows to update. As it stands right now I have windows update turned off and my graphics card is showing up in the device manager as a standard vga graphics card. I have tried updating with the disk supplied and also automatically from windows.

If it matters I'm running 32bit Windows Vista premium sp1.

Could be faulty 9600 many damaged cards work with out drivers and crash with drivers installed.
I would download drivers from manufacturer site and make another clean OS install just to make sure.

I've done an edit it is actually a 9600 if that makes any difference. I've downloaded drivers from their site and done 2 windows installs nothing has helped. Although I don have another one as I intended to make use of sli, I may try installing the other one.

As for the extra power connector I could only see one? (which I forgot to plug in at first and it didnt work)

And did you plug extra power connector ?

It is a clean build, as I said I built it myself. I assume you mean to un install the 9600 as 6600 was a typo. At the moment there shouldn't be any nvidia drivers, in the device manager its not showing up as a nvidia device just a standard vga graphics adapter. Is it still worth trying this, would a restore point before hand be useful or unnesessary?

if it shows up as a standard vga adapter, then that means vista already installed it's "standard vga adapter" driver. if you right click on it, is there an option to uninstall these? there should be, and after that try installing your nvidia drivers.

I un installed the vga adapter drivers, installed the new drivers and it reset and worked. In device manager it was recognised as a nvidia 9600 but there was a yellow question mark beside it, i clicked on it, told it to update drivers and when it did and restarted i got the blue screen again

could you be more specific on the blue screen? is it a nvlddmkm.sys error? i got that a lot when my 8800GT was dying on me and it only did it when i had drivers installed(until i underclocked).

Just gonna do it again now, the blue screen doesn't stay up very long though and the pause/break button doesnt work

ok, that is the error i was getting when my 8800GT was failing me. I'd sent it to my bro and when i got it back i had this issue when i installed drivers. I had to downclock it with rivatuner and save it to load the underclocked settings at startup so it wouldn't crash. I just got lucky and loaded up rivatuner quick enough to underclock it and all was good. Does it crash immediately for you or do you have like a 20sec window or so? I had a window of 20sec or so and that's how i managed to keep my rig going. see if you can pull that off and if underclocking fixes it then you need to rma.

I don't get a window at all, after googling the error code I see it literally could be anything. Thanks for your help

yea, that's what i hated about it. There's a lot you can try such as different drivers(didn't work for me as it was a hardware issue) or booting into safe mode. My best bet is your having the same issue i did, only it may be worse off since you don't even get any time at the desktop b4 the crash. RMA

For anyone who cares it looks like it was a hardware problem, I put in the other card and its working. Of course now the sound isn't but there ya go
