vista drivers do work in windows 7, so what they say is your only option at the moment.

As for official AGP drivers coming out for windows 7: i find it unlikely. AGP is old and dead, and windows 7 is the latest and greatest operating system. companies arent going to be spending any time and money writing drivers for hardware that such a small percentage of their owners are using - i'd suggest looking at a PCI-E update as soon as possible, if you intend to use windows 7 primarily.

windows vista drivers work fine in windows 7, heck they both use same same driver model
much like you chould use 2k Drivers in XP, you can use vista drivers in 7, this time they work better together, the driver model isnt that diffrent between 7 and vista

No, windows 7 is COMPATIBLE with windows vistas driver model. saying they use the same model is incorrect.

Windows vista uses WDDM 1.0 only

Windows 7 uses WDDM 1.0 (PS2.0/DX9.0C) OR WDDM 1.1 (PS4.0/DX10.0)

now that the questions have been covered, i renamed the thread from wind 7 to windows 7, and moved it to general software, instead of general hardware.

i can see the logic in placing it in hardware, but its about windows 7 and its drivers moreso than the 2600XT.

Windows vista uses WDDM 1.0 only

Windows 7 uses WDDM 1.0 (PS2.0/DX9.0C) OR WDDM 1.1 (PS4.0/DX10.0)

I'll correct you slightly...

Win9x -> VXD (max DX8.1 (SM 1.0))
Win2k/WinXP -> WDM (max DX9c / SM 3.0)
WinVista -> WDDM 1.0 (max DX10 / SM 4.0, but will be upgradeable to DX11 / SM 5.0)
Win7 -> WDDM 1.1 (max DX11 / SM 5.0)

However it is correct that Windows 7 can use either WDDM 1.0 or 1.1.

we have a mis-understanding - i didnt mean what the maximum the OS was capable of (for games, etc), i meant what it USED - as in, for aero

that was something i didnt clearly state, my bad

Well, it basically means that both, Vista and 7 use same driver model where WinXP and Win9x use completely different one. That's why Win9x drivers never worked on WinXP and also why WinXP drivers never worked on Vista. But Vista drivers do work on Win7. It's same driver model, it's just that MS updated it a bit. But it's still compatible.

my original point was that for the OS, windows vista uses WDDM 1.0 - thats its requirement for a video cards drivers in order to operate.

Windows 7 *will* operate on windows vista drivers - and happily, however it will be restricted to WDDM 1.0 - which has some minor performance implications.

we're dancing around the same topic, yes.

i just wanted to make it clear that while vista drivers work, some features/functionality may be lost

actually i try vista drivers on win 7 but it doesn't install the display driver or i try to run it manually and it sad that is ancompatible with my OS system ?

you need to find a driver that actually supports your card first of all, and you may need to run the installer in compatibility mode
