Advice on buying a new PSU in the $100 Range

I just finished a new build using an ASUS m5a78l-m/usb3 M/B, an AMD FX8350 CPU, 8gb Corsair Vengeance ram, and a Kentek 680 W PSU, put into a Corsair Spec 1 Carbide case.
I plugged it in and got the green M/B light but when I pushed the power button I got a split second of lights and just a slight jerk on the cpu fan then nothing I triple checked everything but nothing has changed. Any idea what I did wrong.
Thanks in advance

Are you running a discrete GPU also?

I've never heard of Kentec PSU so I Googled the 680 watt version and noticed complaints about it not supplying the power it claimed. It says 22 amps on the +12V rail so that's good for 264 watts if it really supplies that. Do you have another PSU you could swap in?

Just using the onboard hdmi, I do have another psu but it's very old and 500w. Everything I bought was brand new. I just read what you were referring to and it seems my saving a few $ did not pay off then. Thankyou for the advice and fast response

I agree to try another PSU - but also note a common newbie (and distracted pro) mistake is to insert a standoff in the case where there is no motherboard mounting hole. Cases are designed to support 1000s of different motherboards so it is common for there to be more mounting holes in the case than the motherboard needs. This results in a standoff shorting out the board. So you may need to pull the board to verify you only have a standoff where you have a motherboard mounting hole.

That is one thing I am 100% positive I did correctly, I even made a paper template to ensure it. But I will dbl check just to be 110%, Thanks

The proper way to start a build is hook the PSU, board, one stick of memory, cpu and cooler, monitor (without the case) and see if it POSTs

So no hard drive, DVD, no dedicated GPU (unless no IGPU) no cards, USB devices, no mouse just a keyboard

Just do it on a cutting board or wood table

Case shorts are very common with new builds, bad sound cards, bad USB devices, CPU pins, miss aligned cooler all can cause problems

Thank you Thank you. You were correct, I swapped out the PSU with my old 500W DYNEX from my old pc and it fired up right away. But still have to get a new PSU because the DYNEX 12v is too short for my new bottom mount case. Any suggestions on a new one ?
Thanks again

Cool. I was pretty suspicious of that Kentek PSU. Start a thread for recommendations on a PSU and your budget and where you can buy from and you will get some sound advice here on TPU.

Or you could just change the thread title. :)

Lesson learnt , never ever buy a cheapo psu , just think yourself lucky that piece of crap didn't blow and take your nice shiny new cpu and motherboard with it!

Yes, I am lucky, whew, dodged a bullet

plenty of good power supplies that can be had in that price range. do you plan on putting in 1 or more discreet gpu's?

Just one perhaps in the near future, I was just looking at an
EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G1

Are you planning for a Discreet GPU?

~500W will more than enough if you go for something like 1050/Ti etc (You can get away with Good 300W PSU also)
Try
EVGA 500B,Corsair CX500 will be fine for you.
I am planning on a GPU, 2 additional SSD's 2x 16gb more memory and a Card Reader in the very near future.
(I am a retired and budget conscious gamer lol)

Seasonic 660XP2 sometimes gets under $100 if you want Platinum.
