AM3 is to be the quick successor to AM2, and should have DDR3 support. AM2 will only last for about a year, then AM3 will replace it. It looks like AMD is going to start releasing new sockets more often. Was it just me or did AMD skip AM1?

Prepare for AMD's socket armageddon. If you've been putting off your new system for the latest socket, be warned. It won't last long. :laugh:

OMG! This is the worst thing even. The 939 seems to be the core of AMD, that dies, then the AM2 replaces it. Then the next day, the AM3 comes out... Does this remind you of the Apple company and IPODS? Look! A new IPOD... wait... Look! A new AMD...

It's too bad AM2 won't last like 939 did, but do they really need that bandwidth???

Only reason I could see they would: Quad cores with one memory interface, that would probably have no trouble at all saturating DDR2 memory.

Odd though that they put off the DDR2 switch for so long and then want to change to DDR3 so quickly, especially since it's not yet available...

Hmm wonder if I can make my 939 last up til AM3. I don't want to have to bother with AM2 if AM3 is just going to come out a year later.

That means that the socket AM2 will last as long as the 754 did, but why does AMD relase the sockets in such a short range?

Not good thinking. When AM3 comes out they will probably be saying the same thing about AM4.

Easily to wait I would say. As long as your cpu can keep up with your graphics card I wouldn't worry.

There seem to be two ways of looking at it. You are either a person who hits the mid-range set of components in every generation, or you are a person who goes for the top end and then skips a generation. I tend to do the latter with graphics cards, and the former with the rest...

yes.. its you :roll:
AM3 = DDR3
AM2 = DDR2
S939 = "AM1" = DDR1

Was socket 939 really considered AM1, or are you joking? Link?

no.. but its logical.. because in AM2 the 2 stands for DDR2 .. (i think) so S939 should be "AM1" ... do u understand?? :P just thinking hypothetical.. it would make sense though..

Makes perfect sense. But why not 9392 or something. Wait... that would not work...

damn.. that would be one hell of a socket.. :rockout: then the CPU would be as big as a motherbord.. :laugh:

I don't think it's going to be as bad as some people are saying. AMD is coming out with a new set of sockets, right on schedule. The fact that AM2 will have a DDR3 successor makes sense. It would be difficult to have AM2 support DDR3, and it's simpler not to juggle different types of memory when you have an on-die memory controller. When DDR3 finally rolled around the corner, certain cpus would support it and others wouldn't. Can you imagine the confusion? Much easier to do one type of memory per socket.

EXACTLY.

T-bird is to 754 is to AM2 as A is to 939 is to AM3

Plus AM2 seems like crap anyway, who cares about high-latency high-speed (I know I know, netburst was Intel's so AMD's will be lower latency, but that means a totally new type of DDR2, LOW LATENCY)? DDR3 is the future, DDR2 shouldn't have even been released with AMD, seriously. What is there, DDR2 800 right, well DDR goes to 600 and has a lot lower latency. And DDR2 is used as DDR in some graphics cards without people even noticing the difference (9800 Pro had DDR2 OR DDR in different cards, but the XT had only DDR and they were both overclocked the same).

AM2 will become the budget solution like 754 is now, and AM3 will be the kinky fastness.

Look at video cards, they've been on DDR3 for ages. i guess AMD just doesnt want to lose to intel, who will probably go there soon enough,

If GDDR3 was the same as DDR3, they would already be selling it.

Im happy with my AMD fx55@3Ghz for now. I'll waite until AM3 comes out with DDR3 and hopfully @ low latency and higher bandwidth

GDDR3 is DDR3 dude... lol. Niether AMD or Intel has put it to use so far.

um... no. video card ram is vastly different than CPU ram. video card ram is usually 32bit or 16bit per chip, with 256 or 128 bit buses, respectively. CPUs have a 64-bit RAM bus in dual-channel, 32 in single. GDDR3 is high clocking, high bandwidth, high latency, low capacity. DDR3 is high clocking, high bandwidth, ??? latency, high to VERY high capacity.
GDDR3 is GPU-specific and totally unusable on a CPU. there are vast differences that i don't even know. true DDR3 is still in pre-production samples... no one has even begun to mass-produce it even though GDDR3 has been around for several years. big big big difference.
also, to all you 754 haters: 939 will EOL before 754. :toast:
