As the Western world struggles to control the COVID-19 pandemic, life in China has started limping back to normal. The government’s stringent measures have actually brought the spread of the virus to a trickle. At the same time, AMD’s Ryzen 4000 “Renoir” laptops have finally hit retail, in China, at least: with more than 1000+ units already sold. An ASUS model powered by the Ryzen 7 4800H and an NVIDIA RTX 2060 is going for 6999 Yuan. That’s nearly the same as the Intel Core i5-9300H counterparts with similar specs.
Update: We confirmed with AMD. This is the result of a deal concluded with JD.com and ASUS before the COVID outbreak.
This means that we can expect Renoir laptops with Ryzen 7 chips and a baseline RTX GPU to sell for just under the $1,000 mark. Considering how well these APUs perform, that’s quite impressive. It should put some serious pressure on Intel and its partners in the notebook space. We already know that the Comet Lake-H chips are basically more of the same old Skylake design, so don’t expect any significant uplifts on that front.
In case you’re curious, the store in question (jd.com) is one of the top 10 electronics stores in China. The ASUS laptops packing the Ryzen 4000 chips are being shipped from Beijing, with one-day delivery. There are more than 900 reviews up on the store page, with ample units available, meaning there is no shortage. Hopefully, the rest of us can also get a taste of AMD’s 7nm mobile processor soon.
