Gov. George Pataki on Friday announced a state financial deal under which AMD will build a chip factory in New York. The plan is going to be authorized on Friday afternoon for the state to offer the incentives. AMD is to invest US$3.2 Billion in the plant, while the state would offer a total of 1 Billion, included are additional tax abatement offers for choosing the state. The new factory is scheduled for construction at the beginning of 2007 and should become fully operational sometime in 2010, and will house a total of 1.2 million square foot of floor space.
Actually, unconfirmed news of a new plant in New York State has come just days after AMD announced their plans to spend US$2.5 billion to expand and upgrade its chip factories Fab30 and Fab36 for 65nm process in Dresden, Germany, and expected to be completed in mid-2009. On Thursday, Intel just opened a new US$2 Billion factory near Dublin in Ireland that will produce processors using 300mm wafers, using a 65nm process. The new factory would help AMD compete effectively with Intel Corp.
