We were surprised to learn that despite the rumors going around, AMD's eight-core CPU is actually a native one. AMD can do native octa-core just as well as Intel can with its Nehalem, and the codename for this eight-core monster is Montreal. This comes from a highly ranked source at AMD.

So, Montreal is not just two Shanghai quad-cores stitched together, it's a native octa-core 45nm part. This makes sense for servers initially and eventually it will also launch for the ultra high-end gaming market.

Of course, this all happens in 2009.

why does this "make sense" vs dual quad?

One 8-core die is easier to cool than 2 4-core dies.

thats gonna be kick ass or failure like with phenoms...but i think that amd has learned a lesson

either way they have to make them awesome if they are going to get them out after Intels.

Well lets face it there going to need it lol.

yeah intel has has pretty much wiped the floor with amd coming to quads and duals..but hope we will see some competion someday

i like to see amd 8 cored native cpu a against Nehalem Beckton or gainstown, bloomfield

Hmm AMD seems letting go of the Phenom failure and aiming doing it right at Octo-core level.Hope this won't be a failure too.:P

Who the heck would be able to utilize 8 cores in a desktop pc?

Instead of wasting time and resources for e-pen1s enlargement, why don't they work on improving the architechture of their chips?

its the nowadays "double the number of cores or be out of fashion"law..i wanna see more games and apps supporting multicores fully...

urgh.. i forsee trouble. if your making a native 8 core.. your gonna need an exceptional success rate when making the dies, just 1 core dodgy or crapped and the whole lot is gone.

At least if they put 2 4core dies together they can have a higher success rate

Think of the electricity bills running a pc is gonna be like running an electric heater!! the meters gonna have a fit. Im running 880watt now.

Maybe they will end up selling 7,6,5,4,3 cores :D

or for intel 2cores(4threads) 4cores (8 threads) 8 cores (16 threads)
