AMD XP 3000+ delema

Ok, I need some advice. I have a AMD XP 3000+ Asus A7N8X Deluxe Mobo and 1gig ( 512 PC 3200 corsair XMS and 512 PC 2100 cheap stick I got from work ). Currently I have the 3000+ running at stock speeds with 333mhz FSB. Now I have the ability to get it to 400mhz but with the 512 PC 2100 memory I have installed it wouldn't allow it. So my question is this:

Should I take out the slow stick of 512 and then push the 3000+ to 400mhz FSB (stock cooler)? or keep it the way it is?

See i'm not sure if having 1gig is worth it if its not fast enough. I've heard that 400FSB would help me run games smoother, but by how much? A lot of games have ran smoother when I added the slow stick of memory, e.g. WoW Halflife 2. I'd be happy with any advice you could give me.

P.S. Hope this makes sense.

Does that chip have the multipliers unlocked? if so just try raising that up .5, if not i would just keep it the way it is, your system will appreciate the extra RAM much more than some more bandwidth.

Well the 3000 runs at a pretty high multiplier to get to the speed its at, you may not be able to run 400 FSB. If you can keep it under 55 celsius load at 400 FSB then go for it :rockout:

Running 400 FSB should be better than having such slow ram, right now all your ram is running at 266 MHz.

oops my bad, i figured it was running at 333, well that changes my opinion, i woul do as wazzledoozle said.

Thanks for the heads up, I might try this.
Just to make sure. Quick question, when I take the old RAM out and go into the BIOS I should see a 200FSB option and then I should pick the number 11 multiplier, correct? If I don't see the 200FSB option which I do believe my Motherboard supports, should I look to a bios update? My CPU right now underload playing HL2 for about an hour idles 53C with stock cooler. I don't expect you to know the answer but does this seem steady enough to push it up to 400FSB?
Thanks in advance :)

I think you are confused.

The simple answer is that IMHO 1GB of RAM running at 333mhz is better than 512 running at 400mhz...at least for the new, heavier games.

Which 3000+ do you have? The Socket 754 version at 2ghz, or the Socket 939 at 1.8ghz? You will then know what your default multiplier is and can play around with it from there, along with the HTT/FSB etc....

Personally, I would leave it alone until you get 1 GB of ddr400 RAM...

Athlon XP's are not amd64's, they are Socket A processors.

Take the slower ram out, drop your multi to X10 raise your fsb to 200mhz, and don't forget if you don't have an agp/pci lock(I think those mobos do though) then don't bother with it. If you have set it to 33mhz/66mhz.

Also carry out your overclock carefully, you really shouldn't just raise it to 200 straight away,
raise it 10 then run a game or cpu intensive app, check your temps. if all is ok, repeat this step. You will probably get annoyed and want to put the fsb straight up to 200, but I can't stress enough, don't, there is always the chance you will damage the proc.

Good luck,

Gerry.

Then it is me that is confused...:) or at least, reading his post must have been a bit difficult at that time...

hey mate i see your confusion i have a 2400+ and a 512 stick of 2700 ram and a 256 stick of 3200 so i always thought should i up the multiplier or keep the ram??!?!?!

KEEP THE RAM the extra fsb will not make much of a difference without the right bandwith e.g.= 1gig, in some cases 1.5 gigs of ram im telling you keep the ram.

Your cpu comes in 2 versions, 333 mhz and 400 mhz. if for sure you have the 400, its a option to get rid of the slower ram and replace it with pc3200, which is your best option for performance. if its the 333 then you can stay right where you are. but without changing your ram to pc3200, you should still keep it as it is, because the ram is needed more than the faster fsb.
