Another x800GT question (Sorry)

Ok all. I'm beyond frustrated with this new setup I have. I purchased a ASUS P5RD1-V mobo, 2x512 Geil Dual Channel, and a Powercolor X800GT vid card.

My 3DBenchmark 05 score is 3766 showing 16fps on vid card and 2 (yes 2) on CPU. I'm running a P4 LGA 775 800 mHz FSB chip so that definitely doesn't seem right to me.

I've tried to use previous posts to fix my own issue, but I'm getting nowhere.

ATITool says "This video card is not supported" when I try to check any settings. I also get this...

Ugh.. I have some technical background in computers, but not tweaking. I do, however, know that 4 pixel pipelines won't get me anywhere. LoL. Please help!

Just reinstall ATI driver with Catalyst 5.10 or 5.11. It should solve your problem.

I verified again. It was 5.10 so I went ahead and uninstalled it completely, then reinstalled 5.11. I'm having the same issue.

I checked the ATITool log and it said "2005-11-12 11:35:44 Could not locate ATI BIOS - assuming 27.000 Mhz Ref. clock". Ugh...

I went to a command prompt and did atiflash.exe -i and got a "No adapters found". :banghead: Any other suggestions?

Maybe try taking the video card out and putting it back in. :) Sometime that helps when there are driver issues that shouldn't be there or when something isn't quite working right.

Is this a new build? ...or did you have another video card in the computer and recently upgraded?

If it's a new build, it could be any number of things. I would check and recheck all your system BIOS settings. There may be something there that is holding you back. Make sure your cooling is good on your P4, otherwise it may be clock-throttling.

These are all probably far off, but you never know. It may not be the video card.

Nevermind... I just saw that you recently bought your motherboard. Again, I'm thinking it's not the video card. Make sure your BIOS is set up correctly, and that you have the latest chipset drivers.

If I'm not mistaken, that motherboard uses the ATI XPRESS 200 chipset. There are some known issues with that chipset.

Does that motherboard have built-in video? If so, you could try disabling it (if it isn't already) to see if that helps with your video card being detected properly.

Ok I should clarify a couple points. :-b

Yes it is a replacement. I had a Gigabye mobo with a Radeon 9600 AGP 8x. I opted to try out the PCI-e after hearing of the double bandwidth capacity and finding a good price on a supposedly good card.

I had to flash the mobo bios to get it to even see the card so it is as up-to-date as possible. All of the motherboard toys (ASUS Probe, it's OC tools, etc.) see it as a x800GT without any issue. It's only ATITools (the .24 version) and ATIFlash that do not recognize the card. I was going to try to flash the vid card to the GTO2 (or GTO I can't remember atm) bios to increase performance but the program didn't recognize any ATI adapters.

The BIOS for this mobo does not allow you to disable the onboard video adapter. It has a setting to check pci-e then go to integrated so that leads me to believe that it disables the onboard automatically if a card is detected. I've searched high and low for a disable feature. (I just realized I didn't even think of disabling in device manager :banghead: )

ASUS has tools to monitor everything and my case temp stays around 36 degrees. I have a front, rear, and side case fan as well as cpu fan and 2 fans on my modular power supply. It doesn't seem to be running TOO hot.

When I called ASUS and told them the results I was getting from 3DBenchmark, they told me to RMA it... again.

As far as known issues with the ATI 200 chipset, what are they? I'm probably going to call NewEgg today and tell them to send me a different type of board. I'm half tempted to send it all back and just drop a 6600gt on my gigabyte board.

Ok well I'd finally had it. LoL. I'm returning the p.o.s. ASUS ATI 200 xpress mobo and have a AOpen i915 en route. I'm hoping this will rectify the majority of the problems. I'm also going to export my needed data onto a spare HDD I have at home and start with a clean install when I get the new mobo.

Thank you to those that offered their suggestions. Hopefully I'll be reading over the 50 million "get more out of your x800gt" posts later this week. :p

Yeah, the guys at HardOCP are currently having problems with Falcon NW because they badmouthed the ATI chipset..... oh well. Better luck with the |nt3l board. ;)

Thanks. Hey another quick question to make me sound like a complete noob. Is there anything special I need to know about using the Arctic Silver compound? I've swapped my CPU so many times with all this bad mobo crap that I'm going to replace the heat sink compound and I heard it was the best.

I read you just clean it with 99% rubbing alcohol. Is that safe enough? Do I need a certain amount of compound? Sorry to ask such dumb questions but I'm mainly a networking/programming person. LoL

No problem, any time. With Arctic Silver, just remember... "Thin to win". Really, most people put waaaay too much on. The best thing to do is put a grain of rice-sized drop on the die, and smooth it on using something plastic... never metal. Personally, I use a piece of saran wrap around my finger, and then make sure it's applied evenly. Never use your finger alone. Skin oil can actually create more heat. After that, take an even smaller amount and just rub it into the bottom of the heatsink/waterblock. You're not looking to make a layer... you just want to fill in any impurities in the grain of the metal. Apply the heatsink/waterblock flat and even, and try not to move it around as you tighten it up.

Ugh... PC runs HOTTER with Arctic Silver 5. :banghead:

Here's what I did...

I removed the old thermal paste and then put a very small amount of the AS on. I used a baggie (basically the same as saran wrap w/o the static potential) and made a nice, even, thin layer. I then put a little bit on the heat sink and smoothed it out. Sounded simple enough. Now I'm at 42/54 on temp.

Did I also mention that my score didn't get much better with the new mobo? LoL. It's at 3868 right now and I'm going to try the ATI Tool again tonight.

If for some reason ATI Flash doesn't recognize the vid card again, can I still flash it? Is there a way to force it? I just want this crap running better. LoL

What version of ATI Flash are you trying to use?
