I'm running a fresh installation of windows 10 1809 on a new samsung 970 evo nvme.

I have a 750GB hitachi mechanical drive in my rig for storage.

I connected my old samsung 860 pro SSD with a sata usb adapter.
Tried to copy some folders from the old windows 8.1 installation to the machanical hitachi drive.

While it was doing it's thing I was greeted with the error as in title.

The hitachi drive always made some clicking noise now and then as long as I have it in my gaming rig but I never had any problems with it actually.

Also when I check the hitachi drive's health, it shows no problem.

Should I replace the mechanical drive?

Try to disable APM and AAM with CrystalDiskInfo.

Ok you mean it's advanced power management head parking disabling should fix the clicking noise.

But how about the crash?

Clicking noises are a bad omen, prepare to replace the drive.

It's a software error, related to windows itself and possibly 3rd party software such as start8 and virtual box.

I don't use start8 or virtual box.
I checked with bluescreen viewer and on top of the list it said ntoskrnl.exe

The crash happened during copying.

HDD clicking is either APM or another head parking feature.

APC_INDEX_MISMATCH BSOD is related to the USB controller. Update USB drivers and firmware if possible.

Make sure your SATA to USB adapter isn't damaged (or just cheap). And plug it to the rear USB ports (not front panel).

Update USB drivers and firmware if possible. Make sure your SATA to USB adapter isn't damaged (or just cheap). And plug it to the USB ports on the back.

The sata to usb adapter came with my samsung 860 pro, ok I'll try to connect it to the back.

Windows 10 installed all the USB drivers automatically.

The latest USB drivers for my motherboard on asus' page says it's from 2016...
https://www.asus.com/nl/Motherboards/Z170-PRO-GAMING/HelpDesk_Download/

I'm on the latest BIOS.

If the exact same error comes back, or you can reproduce it, than install the LATEST windows insider build in dual boot on another partition, and test if the error is there as well.
Otherwise, you can revert bios settings to optimized defaults and continue using the pc and see if it comes back.

Don't trust the automatically installed drivers.

You have 2 USB controllers: Intel and ASMedia.

ASMedia has a firmware update on ASUS' website.

Latest drivers for both can be found on station-drivers.com.

yes, definitely install the LATEST intel inf chipset driver, for usb controllers and your motherboard chipset, place command line shortcut "-overall" on the setup shortcut.
Upgrade your asmedia firmware and driver, and possibly the usb dongle firmware, check "plugable" website , they have firmware for many common usb to sata chipsets.

edit: I was posting a follow-up to regeneration's post

Ok just plugged it in to the back on USB 3.1 and I copied some files without a problem.
Not sure if I want it to plugin to the front again....

Also looking at a new drive to be safe, is this seagate drive any good? Your opinions.
https://www.alternate.nl/Seagate/BarraCuda-Pro-1-TB-Harde-schijf/html/product/1469587?lk=16780

Check the S.M.A.R.T. raw data for bad sectors and other errors, and run a surface test to be sure.

If its just clicking sound, it could be the head parking feature (advanced power management).

Ok I've installed the Intel chipset inf utility and the Intel chipset device software (INF update utility) from:
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/90591/Intel-Z170-Chipset

Should I install the intel management engine driver? (since people were debating about this)

I have the clicking noise on my Samsung f1 spindrive as well for years now since I installed windows 10, using crystal disk info in windows startup and overwritting apm/aam fixes this. This does not mean there's something wrong with the drive, just some crappy change in the way windows 10 approaches hdd's and them not bothering to present a workaround themselves..

Another of those lovely gifts that came with pushing win 10 on all old systems without caring at all for bugs and driver problems that came with them.

Anyways, just don't buy a new drive because of the clicking, there isn't a single new drive of the one you own now that would not click. It has absolutely nothing to do with the drive dieing.

Install ME, yes.

I have never seen any use or purpose to intel management engine, and happily it is absent on my motherboard(it has ipmi megarac sp gui instead).
ME engine adds a useless windows service.
BTW, did the error come back yet?

It doesn't have to be, but there is little harm in it.

You have a server mobo...makes sense it has an ipmi to it.

HDD S.M.A.R.T. looks fine. As I said, APM is responsible for the clicking.

BSOD was a result of USB driver bug or low-quality front panel USB cable/port.

Get Hitachi Disk Fitness Test and check it.
