Hello

I have a i5 12500h and i constantly face "X" game is better with e-cores on and "Y" game is better with off

I´m wondering , is this exclusive to the 12th generation or all e-cores perform like this?

I find it very annoying to constantly go to the bios to disable/enable e-cores to suit the game needs

I also tried process lasso to disable the e-cores and it doesn´t work at all , the performance is not improved

I´m asking because i´m about to upgrade the laptop and if all gens are like this , it is better to go ryzen altogether

thanks

Have you updated your OS? I've played with a 12600kf and 14900k while never having this issue.

i´m using w11 pro latest version

it does not happen on all games but very noticeable on elden ring for example

They should work fine, especially under Windows 11. But in general, i'd tell you to buy a Ryzen laptop anyway. The CPUs are better suited for mobile format.

I´m about to get a acer nitro with a i5 13420h

thought the 13th gen fixed it somehow

but if it is all the same it is no worth keeping on intel

i have severe stuttering on elden ring with e-cores on for example on elden ring ( it goes away when disabled)

but it is very annoying overall , having to constantly enable / disable

E-cores are better on Raptor Lake - at least parts that truly are Raptor Lake - many are just 12th Gen rebrands. Some restrictions have been lifted regarding E-cores and ring bus clocks which are no longer bound, but in general, this isn't applicable to laptops.

Seriously, if you want me to give it to you straight: if you want cheap and reliable, buy an AMD Ryzen Dell G15 gaming laptop. Those things are slick. No throttling, pushes good frame rates. I have the 2021 5515 and I love it. Intel CPUs are generally bad news on mobile, especially if they lock out the controls for Throttlestop with the system EC.

I second the recommendations to abandon Intel and go AMD:

1. The very idea of heterogenous cores is... brave to put it politely.
2. These E-cores are actually worse performance per watt, especially if we downclock the P-cores.
3. Game developers forgot how to optimise games so thinking you might E-core your way to better gaming experience is naïve at best.

i´m sorry but what does this do ? is there some software that can enable / disable cores easily ? i tried process lasso but it did not work

thanks
Believe his larger suggestion is checking BIOS version for updates and along with it awareness of correct sequence to install BIOS, ME firmware, and Intel chipset driver. :)

Are you sure your laptop isn't data limiting or has a plan running that is restricting power usage within a set window length?

i just checked right now and frametimes are way more stable with e-cores off

just disabled them in the bios

is there a order to install the intel software ? the bios for my laptop is the latest but i don´t lnow if there is a correct order to install

Can't open your system specs to see if laptop model is listed. If you already have latest BIOS there is a chance you have newest ME firmware. Search your model or look on manufacturer support page for correct order. Want to say it should be ME followed by chipset if BIOS is up to date but others are not.

Look in Control Panel > Device Manager > System Devices for Intel chipset and ME versions to check against currently available.

hey guys i´ve found one discovery

i did not disable the e-cores at all when elden ring was working properly ( it ran 4 performance cores and 8 e-cores , instead of the HT for the performance cores that adds 2 cores on each performance core )

It was 4 performance cores at 4,2ghz and 8 e-cores at 3,3ghz

Why does this happen ? the game was running with the e-cores at atll , the hyperthreading for the performance was disabled

How can this happen ?

thanks

Latest Intel chipset driver first then the ME driver followed by any other drivers. Then update the BIOS. Most Intel BIOS updates will also update the ME firmware. Sometimes the ME firmware is separate and should be done after the BIOS.

At least I knew there was an order of operation and BIOS almost certainly updated ME.

This is the Management Engine SOFTWARE, not to be confused with bios update Firmware.

Intels management engine helps windows with power and scheduling.

i always thought it was more for remote support - i.e. managing deployments of laptops. Im not seeing anything in the booklet about scheduling help.

Intel® Driver & Support Assistant

If you run the Intel DSA it will tell you what drivers you need. Also in the bios you can enable "Intel Dynamic Tuning" which enables APO and installs an e-core driver for certain games -- this helps quite a bit but most of these games are pretty old:

What problems do you observe?

i will uplodad some images soon

but with all cores i get severe stuttering and with ht disable i get a flat frametime

what does it explain disabling ht improving performance ? i didn´t disabled ecores at all

with 4 p cores , ht ( for each p core ) and all 8 e cores i get bad performance

with 4 p cores (ht disabled) and all 8 e cores e get good performance

i don´t know why this happens

uh i may sound a bit crazy but the stuttering completely stopped after installing ME

elden ring would stutter a lot ( there are a lot of complaints in other sites as well )

i´m getting lower stutters and better frame time overall with e-cores enabled

does ME helps with schedulling maybe?

Big pee or little pee cores. Maybe the pee cores are having performance issues.
i don´t think so , only elden ring is affected ( iirc sekiro has stutters with e-cores as well)

For Elden Ring have you tried disabling vsync in the Nvidia control panel and run the game in borderless window mode instead of fullscreen? This actually fixed the stutter for me.

Optimal scheduling for heterogenous core CPUs requires that you can see into the future and hence won't happen.

There is a reason why there are still no server chips like that.
