Ok, my usual KB is playing up, basically it seems as if a shift key is being held down as all letters are in caps, numbers along the kb show their respective shift function instead of a number ie: for 1 it types!, 2 it types " etc, also webpages are opening in a new window everytime I click a link, windows key isnt working etc. Any idea what the cause could be? I have tried removing the KB from devices and re-adding it, different USB port, restarting the computer etc and nothing seems to work. One thing that may have caused it is I started cleaning the kb as I always do with a nearly dry cloth but didnt realise my PC hadn't been shut down and was asleep so it caused soe programs to open, start menu to pop up etc no biggy I thought at the time though thats the only thing I can think of that might have caused the problem, is it possible theres some kind of Windows setting I might have activated by accident whilst doing this or it more likely the KB has actually died? :banghead:

Edit: just realised it can't be a windows setting as the replacement one I'm typing on is fine...doh :kookoo:

What keyboard are you on about ?, maybe check under the shift keys for a issue or even taking the whole thing apart, if it's membrane type be careful as some can just rub off really easy.

Maybe take the shift keys off see if that helps, be careful as most have little bars and can be broken.

It's a cheap backlit one with membrane keys, I pulled both shift keys off it's still exhibiting the same behaviour, it was fine after a reboot earlier but that doesnt seem to be working now and it is happening as soon as the computer boots, think I must have done something innadvertantly while cleaning it but honestly I have cleaned many a KB this way for years and never had one crap out on me before.

I bought a membrane keyboard for one of the kids ,and it was doing something very similar where it would type "m" over and over and over and over again if you pressed the "m" key.

I took it apart and it happened to have an extra punch out in between the normal m key contact & the keys bottom.

this here was in between the bottom of the 'm" key and the membrane

It's probably sticky keys. If you press shift 5 times quickly, it automatically enables it.

It's in Control Panel -> Ease of Access -> Make the keyboard easier to use.

If everything is disabled in there, I'd try a different keyboard. The keyboard might be erroneously spamming shift.

What are toggle keys? the "turn on toggle keys by holding down the NUM LOCK key for 5 seconds" box was checked, I wonder if it wasn't the shift keys that had a problem but maybe num lock...

ok its definitely windows as its happening with the other keyboard im using now, having to use the on screen keyboard ffs

That's just the shortcut key to enable/disable it. If none were checked on the left-most boxes, than that's not the problem. :(

It only happened with the replacement KB when I unplugged that and plugged the old one back in and it was doing the usual crap, put the replacement back in and it started doing it also, seems a reboot has let me use the replacement but this is an odd one for sure, dont get me wrong the replacement is a decent enough MS KB and feels pretty nice to type on, it's just I like to sit in the dark at night on my PC and backlit is a must, I think I'm going to have to buy a new one, seems easier than reinstalling Windows

Turn off all accessibility options, sticky keys too.

I have done this to no avail, issue still persists and is starting to annoy and baffle me equally as much, I have function keys on the KB in question and read something on a MS page about a similar problem where fn lock could be on and to turn it off because of the behaviour of said KB you need another one with the same kind of fn keys to turn it off, unfortunately the other KB I have doesnt have fn keys so I'm kinda stuck.

I also turn off system restore by default on Windows so can't even roll back to see if I inadvertantly done something when cleaning the KB :banghead::banghead::banghead:

Ouch, yeah leave it on, its saved me especially doing driver updates.

Cant you hook up the 1 offending piece of hardware then completely remove the customization software? What about your mouse? Does it include software too?

There's no software for the KB installed, it does however have function keys and I think my cleaning it whilst the PC was on caused some kind of key combination to be pressed and saved that I cant fathom for the life of what that might have been, as the KB isnt functioning properly and it seems like shift is being continually pressed (caps when caps lock is off, ! instead of 1, opening links in a new window etc) I cant use that kb to undo it and may need another with functions keys that isnt malfunctioning to undo whatever has been done, if that makes much sense?..

I could do a complete Windows reset which will keep my files but uninstall all of my programs but not sure I want to go down that route as honestly buying another £10 backlit kb seems better than spending hours reinstalling programs and updates etc

Ok buy another keyboard, if it still happens Do a Clean Install if possible

why do we have 13 post thread on what is clearly and unequivocally a bad membrane keyboard
both your keyboards are bad, stop buying 15 dollar keyboards

No both are not bad, if you cant follow all 13 posts to see that then maybe you shouldn't chime in, and honestly this is a forum where people seek help when they have issues which usually consists of troubleshooting first to rule everything else out before deducing it is a hardware fault. Cheap keyboard or not. Oh and I buy in £ btw not $ but thanks for your help, I could have thought about just throwing it in the bin before I posted though that's not the point!

but thats exactly the point
its a keyboard it either works or it doesn't. if it doesn't work it's bad >> replace it, keyboards are pretty simple devices there isn't much to go wrong.

membrane keyboards are infamous for the failure mode you experienced the second one being bad was just a fluke, in 15 years I have seen problems like yours that were NOT THE FAULT of the keyboard maybe 3 times, and always it was some vendor software or other 3D party software at fault

You constructed that better than your last post hence my reply though it was 2.30am when you posted it so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt lol, and the other KB I have isnt bad it just exhibited the same behaviour as the first when I swapped them out in Windows, on a reboot or starting up it works perfectly fine. And yes I have now given up on trying to see if I can fix it as I did a Windows reset and it's still not working, and is also not working properly in the bios, it's under warranty as it's only 6 months old but honestly it's not worth the time and effort and cost of shipping for the sake of £13.. meh :(
