Hello,

I recently bought the new 8700k and the AsRock Pro4. I want to oc a bit. Now while searching the internet I heard that this mobo is horrible at oc. One other guy told that he managed to get 5GHz. Does anybody of you have experience with oc with that mobo? Unfortunetely I haven't found reliable data about that. I appreciate every useful info.

Kind regards, Razhu

B350 chipset? If you want to overclock you want a z370 board.

It isn't the best, but it isn't shit either. YOu should be able to get a decent overclock on it, likely hitting your thermal limit before the board's limit.

I'd be satisfied with 4.2 - 4.5GHz

Then leave it at stock, the 8700k will already boost to 4.3-407GHz depending on load.

You should be able to do an all core overclocked to 4.8GHz really easily.

That's a lower to midrange model, you should get what you're looking for from it without alot of fuss. 4.5 to 4.8 should be easy with that one as long as the chip isn't giving problems with temps - Delidding the chip, if not done already could help with that if need be.

Naturally a better than stock CPU cooling solution would be good for it too.

I don't really want to take the chip apart. I have no experience delidding chips. I think my cooler is not a high-end version. I currently got the Brocken Eco. Thinking about getting the Dark Rock Pro 3.

bying new air cooler for 30.- more you will only get maybe a few ° better temp?? my opinion not worth the money. broken eco has very good price/perf.
and what newtekie said:
this cpu´s boost to 4,7ghz-do you need more?

You want 4.2-4.5Ghz ? That is too low !!!!

Excellent board at $120. Although its VRMs is medicore but it can still get the job done. There is a lots of voltage cap (1.52Vcore , 1.15 VCCIO , 1.2 VCCSA etc. but you can leave IO and SA at auto so those voltage can exceed cap). For VCore I wouldn't recommend exceeding 1.52V anyways.

The good thing is DDR4-4400 support. Yes this $120 board is rival $400 ASUS APEX !!

Pic from my friends.

DDR4-4400 o_O

What about 5.5Ghz with just custom loop ?

This time 8700K 5Ghz + DDR4-3600 @ 4400 running Super PI 32M and Hyper PI 32M (very sensitive on memory).

ive got the pro4 z370 and am running 5.1 at about 1.34. i say about because i am using offset voltage and it varies between 1.344 and 1.36. anyway it wil game at 5.3 but for everything to really be stable 5.1 is the best. might go back to 5.0 cause it runs at 1.24 stable and thats a big voltage drop to only give up 100mghz. dont mess with any of the auto stuff. just go to the cpu part of oc tweaker and change the multi to all core and then put in 50 and go to the voltage section in oc tweaker and put it to offset. then you will probalby have to actually put in something like -50 instead of adding voltage you have to subtract cause it really puts the volts to it (unless you go with the bios version 3 and up which uses much less. in that case just leave it at 0). if its not stable then go up to -25 and then 0 and then... well you get the picture. also you must set the llc to its highest setting. on other boards you want the middle setting or so but on this one you have to use the highest setting just to keep vdroop from sagging the volts too far. but of course on this board level 1 is the highest setting so dont assume that 5 is higher lol.

yes but only with active cooling on vrm, without one it'll throttle and quite possibly cause damage. what cooler are you using, what case do you have and is there any airflow around the upper vrm area from top fans ? consider adding a thermal pad and a heatsink.

I use a Dark Rock Pro 3 on mine and you can push 1.3v without any issue on it. Going higher... I had to dial back the OC in the summer, with ambient temps of 35 C in the room my 8700K got to boiling point ;) Its not the cooler though, its the chip. It just gets hot for most people and no amount of cooling will stop that. The cooler is rated for 220W or so (and you'll push 130-150w at this voltage)

1.3v is enough for 4.8 all core on most of the 8700Ks.

I'm most worried about his board longevity. Pro4 doesn't even have coooling on high/low side mosfets above the socket.
