So, I have a 100mb ADSL connection over my Merlined firmware AC68u trusty router. I have my laptop, my TV and my phone connected, that's all.

Is there any use in getting the AX-86U Pro at 250$ for a small apartment like that with 3 devices?

I might upgrade to Fiber (1000mb) soon, if it matters.

Thanks! It's either that or a high end Roccat Vulcan keyboard :0 haha

If you're upgrading to gigabit, it will matter as your current router won't get anywhere close over WiFi.
It also has a rather old processor, which may or may not be able to deliver gigabit speeds. From my testing when it was new, I seem to remember it was borderline, but that's a very long time ago, so I could be wrong.

I picked up the AX-86U Pro earlier this year, as my old R7800 kicked the bucket after a solid 7 years of uptime and it's by no means a bad router, but $250 seems om the expensive side, I only about $215 for it. The ROG Rapture GT-AX6000 often goes for about the same money or less, so it might be a worthwhile alternative, as long as you don't mind the design. It also has a second 2.5 Gbps port.
The AX-86U Pro can do 2 Gbps sync speeds over WiFi and exceed gigabit speeds in actual transfers, but only nearby the router on 2x2 devices such as phones and laptops.

I hear you!
The Merlin is what's keeping it running at the moment, not the hardware :)

I will see if they put the 86 Pro on sale on black friday and pull the trigger!

Is there a fiber-modem that I will need to buy as well or is that usually supplied by the fiber company?

No idea, that's something that depends on your ISP.
I have Ethernet straight into my flat and that's it. Different countries have different systems.

Cool!
I found one at 220$, just before I buy, do you think it will become an irrelevant router with the launch of Wifi7 devices soon?
There are already Wifi7 routers..

In the next decade, I will probably NOT have a connection faster than 2gbps, not sure if that's relevant to Wifi7 or not.

How could a router become irrelevant if it works? The only issue is software support, but you already know how to solve that concern.

WiFi 7 will bring with it some other advantages over just pure throughput improvements, but it will require WiFi 7 devices, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
As of right now WiFi 7 products are horrendously overpriced and not worth it imho.
