You could have gotten a 4090 for only a small amount more though :S

Hi, is there any reason why even the strix 4080 super was worse than regular 4080 in cyberpunk in 4k? I am just curious.

I noticed this, too, seems to be a driver-level regression

I'm afraid this was not an option. I wasn't willing to purchase a low end model (they started above my card's price too) and this already stretched out my budget to the max (the idea was to get the TUF 7900 XTX initially which was about 30% cheaper), but I had a case of last minute ick with 'Nam flashbacks from all the AMD driver problems I had and this time stability was paramount as I simply didn't want to dedicate any time whatsoever to documenting and working around problems with my card.

Anyhow back to the topic at hand, the Strix cards are such luxury products, did you know that it comes with a ROG themed ring for you to wear? It's amongst the things that clearly increase the cost, of course.

Hypebeast GPU, got it. (Or overkill to those with the money that can afford overkill, depends on how you see it)

Pretty much, yeah. It's a thing you buy to treat yourself on a showcase build, rather than something you buy, install on a stuffy case and never look at it again.

It's a great card, with the best of the best components that ASUS has to offer and also a little further small gifts that really refine the overall experience, although the value aspect is certainly questionable.

No offense, but there aint such a thing as a lowend 4090 model - they all had to be built to nvidia's minimum spec. Some like the strix went beyond that, but the difference between the strix and tuf is miniscule, while the price difference is stark !

But yes, you may recall me sharing posts about buying a series of different 4090's, including the strix - and while the strix cooler was a bit better than the others, the coilwhine was absolutely obnoxious even at 60 fps. Meanwhile the Gigabyte 4090 gaming oc im using now has no coilwhine at all till you reach 300 fps. And that card was only 50 usd over msrp. Coilwhine with both the strix and tuf 4090 was so bad that im not sure im gonna even bother buying one of those when the 5090 launches.

Yes, though that is minimum spec. The only one I could kind of stretch was for the PNY Uprising and it looks like vomit I just didn't want it.

I set out to buy something overbuilt that was nominally better than the 3090 I had, I only really flipped it because I had it for 3 full years at that point and I felt like it was time for it to go. That was primarily it or I'd probably still be comfortably running it.

My card has no coil whine and has never had it to any degree, it is also completely silent until frame rates get extremely high and even then the coil noise is very muted, so I can't really say I share the experience although if it did, and at this price, you bet that I'd return it. I bought it for the refinement, after all, and my power supply is super high quality and never had or caused whine either.

Your money, your choice - but i can't say that i understand it... :p I personally wouldn't spent a dime over msrp, unless i was buying the highest end chip - otherwise imo it would always make more sense to just get a higher tier chip :)

Consider this, after I flipped the 3090, I spent the net cost equivalent of a 4060 for the upgrade - got rid of the power limit throttling problems the TUF 3090 used to have, got +25% performance, Ada features, and a killer looking white card for my open bench rig, and so i'm pretty happy. End of the day that's what matters the most. Sweet collection of cards tho, man o_O

Ah, white card.
All expenses make sense now, those things are beauties, and we need more of them. (And we saw plenty during CES!)

ROG has always been good at providing accessories, to be fair. Do prefer the time when they were more practical than show-offy, though. I still re-use the velcro cable straps that came with my Maximus IV Gen-Z almost 15 years ago in my current build along with usual zip-ties. I have no idea what they made them of, but those things feel like you could tow a car with them, they are hilariously durable.
Another thing that came with the board was a hanger for the door with a “Don’t enter, I am gaming” sign. That… I could take or leave.

That you are happy with your choice is indeed all that matters :)

And yeah... gave the 4090 strix to my brother, and the 3090 strix to a friend - and kept the gigabyte 4090 gaming oc. Other 2 got flipped on.

@W1zzard are you going to release the vBIOS for these cards you've reviewed? I see they're in the database but not unhidden.
