Asus P5Q mobo boot problem

Hi, I'm having trouble with a new mobo I switched to.

There's currently 3 HDDs and a Samsung DVD burner installed but I can't boot up using the DVD burner. I was even having trouble with the boot priority but maybe it's better now. I like the layout of the Asus BIOS (I guess it's American Megatrends?) but it's weird, but sometimes it seems like changes aren't taken into effect. Also, I'm not sure how to use the SATA drives in SATA mode but I think I just need to enable AHCI mode?

I don't think the DVD burner is even enabled or detected. I had a Gigabyte P35 board previously and the BIOS was so easy but maybe not laid out as well. I was just so used to it, though, and at least, everything worked.

I'm not sure what's wrong so I hope some experts out there can identify or recognize what's going on! :-(

I tried a Linux LiveCD and it doesn't boot up. I then tried booting into a Linux distro on the HDD and the DVD optical drive is not detected.

I can't do much with Windows at the moment since the ethernet hardware isn't working properly, which I assume, is the result of the mobo change. I think I might temporarily solve this by installing drivers from the Asus CD? I'm planning on a re-install of everything but I need the DVD drive to be detected and work, first. :-/

Anybody have an idea what's wrong?

Is it possible that the optical drive works via power if the data cable isn't plugged in? Would the BIOS indicate this one way or the other? I guess I'm going to have to take the case off and everything??!?

I can't find any settings that are wrong for booting... CD ROM is set as the first/priority boot device.

I've tried both IDE and AHCI settings but no change. No CD/DVD is detected in the drive and obviously, none boot... :(

You have to go into the bios and set boot priority for CD / DVD rom . Also make sure that you have the SATA cables in the right area . There is a white one and an orange one I would not use them . Try the other ones instead . Make sure you go into the bios and set the boot priority as well .

Boot priority is set. Could you elaborate on the cables? I guess my next step of troubleshooting will be to inspect the cables. But, I am used to yellow/orange cables but it's been a while since I had to look at the burner. Not familiar with 'white cables' or 'other ones.'

Please read the manual carefully for boot configuration. There are diffrent controllers for IDE/SATA. I see there are 3 contollers ICH10R,Marvell for IDE and another SATA one silicon image with some special features.
Use AHCI but youll need additional drivers for it. I think win7 loads from pendrive (thank god no floopy is needed anymore).

Also load setup defaults before you do anything. I had a P5K Premium which wouldn't see some hdd's untill I loaded setup defualts. I know it sounds silly but I think they flash them without the defaults reset and ship like that.

The SATA connections that are on the MB are colored One will be white one orange the rest are Red . Make sure that they are in the ones that are colored red . The white and orange are for high speed and may not work for what you have . the red ones should be used first .

Yeah you need to also set the ACHI to raid and some other things as well . You should read the manual for more information on your set up . I have the same one with some differences as mine is a turbo MB .

Thanks. Thanks to caleb, too, for his contribution. :)

But, now, I feel dumb 2x plus I have a couple of other problems.

1) I should have known you guys were talking about the SATA controllers! I opened up the box aka took off one of the side panels (this is an Antec 300 case). The problem was there was no SATA data cable on the burner! I had someone else assemble the build so I'm not to blame for the assembly although you probably will think I should have done it myself! I wish I did! Anyway, all 6 red ports are used up. I have three drives in there and now three eSATA ports connected. I took out a cable from a drive for now (will probably take one out of the eSATA bracket cable later) to just test. The burner boots up fine now.

2) I have another problem once I looked inside. This is off-topic but since some Asus mobo owners are commenting (the Asus P5Q Turbo owner particularly helpful and I'm glad a P5Q series owner answered!), I'm hoping I can receive some replies on my other issue.

I have a Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120 (is that the name?) heatsink connected to the Q6600 cpu. I wanted at least one fan attached but that wasn't done. Also, it looks like the heatsink was attached somewhat crooked. It looks slightly diagonal or not at a perfectly right angle. What should I do?!? I believe that removing the heatsink requires taking the motherboard out or?

Do any of your do your own builds? Attach any aftermarket heatsinks? I think I'll try doing my next build! I've done a few with stock AMD and Intel heatsinks but never the aftermarket 'tower types.' I guess I thought I'd screw it up. I know I'd take a while so I had someone else complete the mobo swap.

Any advice? I want a cpu/heatsink fan. I know the cooling will be better than before with the Antec 300 case (I had an Antec Solo before and the cooling was subpar, imho). However, I prefer a fan cooling the cpu or at least attached. I now have passive cooling AGAIN. Do builders at shops not know how to assemble aftermarket heatsinks? This is the 2nd time this cpu heatsink was built without the fans attached even though I had them. I do have one extra fan but I think it's failing. I thought I might buy a Noctua 120mm fan or two.

Any advice or recommendations? Thanks for the quick replies! I'm happy with the Antec 300 case but still some problems.

Also, they didn't put a fan on the other side panel for cooling the graphics card. Does a fan just attach to the mesh or do I need a fan 'holder' that goes in first? There's nothing connected right now on the mesh design where a fan would go.

Thanks for any further replies! I need an extra computer to practice on! :( :ohwell:

You should be sending us pic's of this . The HS would be better with a fan yes so put one on . Man one thing I would also do is take that thing back to the dumb shits that put it together get your money back and build one your self . This time doing it right . What kind of shit heads did you buy this thing from ? And they did not even connect your fucking sata drives ! WTF ???

Should I take it back alienating myself from a local supplier, though? It does annoy me, though, and the local shops around here really suck! Seriously! There's not many and you would think they'd have done enough builds by now.

I'm not sure storming in there demanding my money back would work, though. The system works now and although I thought a fan would be put on the heatsink, I don't have a fan left supposedly (one was left over but I think it's defective and probably isn't a good choice for a heatsink fan). The fan I wanted to be used there is now one of my intake fans!

Oh hell yes ! You paid good money for some thing that well frankly SUCKS ASS ! Point this out to them . You are the customer and if they are fucking with you then just do one thing , Tell them they will never get any more business from you for one and that word of mouth travels fast and that you will tell your friends , family and any one you can about the crappy service and product they put out . Then see just how long it takes for them to go under . I had a similar issue with a local computer shop here in town and well after I sued them ( I won :rockout: ) I watched as it was 1 year after that they went under and are no longer in business ! You have the right to get what you payed for and if you do not get this then make it clear this is not what you wanted !

I have a P5Q pro turbo as well, its a great board, too bad to see the local shop couldn't (or wouldn't) put it together well.

Let us know what happens, I'm sure there's plenty of people willing to help you out on here!
