Asus X99-E WS "b1" Error Code

No I think one is enough in normal circumstances the second is to overclocking mainly when CPU is above 150W, so standard CPU's should work fine with just one, but in a workstation case it might be different I would guess, there is no harm in having them both connected either it can help stability when board have rich VRM, also would keep an eye on what lights up when starting up there is few leds that could indicate the problem if debug codes are not available, I had no codes and no post when fried bios chip, that's about 3 times, now having 3 more in case. there should be led at the 8 pin if not inserted properly it will light up, also above the 24 pin MemOK led and button. I would start everything from the beginning strip and connect the basics only to see if it posts, but I think the bios chip is fried, maybe even both of them while the board still had the charge while swapping back. Also I would check all the switches and jumpers as simple misconfig can mess it all up, I would not give up on the board like this. I hope you get it running. Just looking at the post before this "Find the proper orientation and push down firmly until the connectors completely fit" could that mean that both of them need to be connected I wonder

Swapped PSU out for an EVGA 850 G2 (as it has 2x 8pin CPU) and now the board does a little more - "00" code and turns off after after seconds then restarts. Also tried another CPU, same code. Tested with only one DIMM in A1.

Edit - Just swapped BIOS chip for the latest one. All DIMMs installed, 2680-v4 in. Power on and the board stays on, 00 code but the blue LED below the CPU (DIAG_CPU) is lit. No display.

Hmm Q-code table shows 00 code Not used so and a quick online search people seems to suggest that remove the cmos battery and put it back in if not then it's a dead bios, board and cpu :(
 
I agree with statement above that is usually the case, but there is still hope, as an owner of an old x79 extreme11 I went through with some codes to, back in a day the 00 was related mainly to the CPU later on when I did the search codes kept changing but in my old manual it was CPU, when my bios chip fried it was actually constant reboot and debug codes repeating itself over and over again, one time got stuck at 00 when CPU was inserted improperly I mean due to size of the 2011 one side had more pressure than the other it was so simple... but it ended in few bent pins, managed to fix with a needle and tweezers, second time I did not take off CPU any more as 2011 is fragile there are articles about it but ended up at 00 again after cleaning up the PC it got even more ridiculous, when cleaning I mounted new custom loop instead AIO and I didn't connect CPU fan header so PC would not start and stuck at 00 stupid idea at that time works till today, used old jumpers on the CPU header so it got some kind of signal and it worked, so before declaring mobo or cpu dead I would still try and make sure after bios reset that cpu header gets the signal, and for a start I would still keep trying with just a single stick of ram in a1, after this I'm out of ideas, if it's not header or bend pins I've got no clue if othe cpus where tried and it's still the same it would narrow it down to bios and mobo I guess
 
Just got round to testing this again, family stuff got in the way.

I got a new BIOS chip delivered however we seem to have developed a new problem. Popped the new chip in and now the board lights up for a second and turns straight off. Proceeded to burn my thumb on the BIOS. Quick googled suggested it was the wrong way round - swapped it and still the same - turns off instantly. Put the old chip back in and it's turning off the same.

I do have another PSU but it's in a build so i'm getting round to testing that.

The board has 2x 8pin CPU. There's no labelling for which would be "primary" - does this matter? I've tried it in both every step of the way and it doesn't seem to change anything.

Starting to lean towards the board dying....

Could it not have damaged the bios chip as it got so hot, or the board from putting it in the wrong way around?
 
Another update.

Took the "updated" BIOS chip out, popped the original one back in and now i'm back to the "61" error code. Happens with both the 2680v4 and 2630v3.

Worth seeing if I can update the original BIOS? (Can I even do that with this issue?)
