So im redoing this persons laptop with a fresh install of windows 64 bit, and i need to install all the drivers again. The laptop as a Ati Xpress X1250 in it, and so i went to the amd.ati site and got the driver for it. it was catalyst 10.2 for Windows Vista 64 bit which i thought would work with the windows 7 64 bit i installed. and So it installed fine and i restarted and the desktop was just a white screen with lines going across. Should i just get the driver from the dell website instead??

EDIT: nvm im just getting all the drivers from Windows Update

hmm got the driver through windows update but its still doing the lines but it not a completely white screen. it goes away though

guys i need help. there's something going on with the graphics driver or something. if a thing comes up and like dims the screen to make sure i want ot install that or whatever the white lines will go across the screen. It wasnt like this before when it was windows Vista 32 bit. Im pretty sure the drive i got through windows update should work with 64 bit OS. It need to get it working right before i give it back to the client

That ^^ and reinstall with the drivers from Dell. If that doesn't work, reinstall Windows again. If that doesn't work there's a hardware problem that happened while you were fixing it.

Also, one bump per 24 hours applies, please don't triple post.

When i go into safe mode its fine as well. Im going to try this thing i found out on line about the device manager and uninstall from there then reinstall with windows update. Alright so its fine without the driver.

All i did was install new memory because 1gb she had before with vista was SO SLOW!

I think i fixed it. I think when i took this thing off the access the keyboard stuff to take it out it pinched a monitor cable. so i just reseated it and tweaked it a bit

you relize that the old intel integrated graphics is faster than that, right? and many modern netbook would put that thing to shame...

it wasn't the ram, it is probably the CPU/gpu/etc being outdated....

Sounds like you got it sorted mate.
many laptops will not install the catalyst drivers because the manufacturers customise the bios and hardware ID`s on the machine so to be safe always run the driver from the manufacturers site.
I think maybe the pinched cable may have had something to do with it to.

hmmm the cable didnt help to much. but with it unplugged from the charger its fine.

its an onboard chip to the dual core AMd turion CPU thats in the system.

im going to try and reseat the battery and memory today and see if that fixes anything. if not then im going to format and go back to a 32 bit OS. becuase i feel like its a software problem because it doesnt do it all the time. just log in screen and a little bit when i power down
