I'm wondering if its a safe/plausible idea to have as my main card an ATi 5-series but have a low end nVidia card on my 2nd pci-e slot purely for CUDA and the like. I'm unsure if its possible having them both running side by side, but im vaguely recalling memories of someone having an nVidia card just for physx while running an ati 4-series as their main gpu.

it's possible -- there's a solution out here somewhere on this forum --

yes it's possible on xp or win7 - just watch that nvidia's current drivers try to block things like physx if you have an ATi as a main card - you'll need hacked drivers to enable it again (plenty of people here can help you with info on that).

Ah, thanking you all :D

I tried to boot my rig (in system specs) with 9300 GE added in the second PCIe, but I couldn't get a picture out of any port. Didn't try HDMI because no such port on my lcd. What should I do? I'm planning on trying (just for fun) playing cryostasis or arkham asylum with physx..

thats odd you get no picture with the nvidia card in but do with it out? never seen that myself

I was able to run a 8800gt for physX with my 5870. Didn't really see any performance gains, so the effort to get it running right wasn't worth it IMHO(I don't have any games right now that use physX).

Maybe I should try different settings for the "init display first" or whatever it was called. I have "PEG", "PEG1", "PCI slot" and "Onboard". Since I thought PEG1 could be the second PCIe x16/x8, I tried it but with no image. Also tested the "PCI slot". So, if PEG will not give picture... ? And of course I had the 4850 in the first PCIe x16/x8 slot. Now I'm with 9300 GE on 2nd slot without 4850 and I don't exactly know, if I should now install the drivers for it and mod them.. after that plug 4850 back?

there is a thread here about this

And your comment was totally useless. No offense.

Not only can you do it, but hopefully some time in the near future you will actually be able to combine the power of both (unfortunately you'll need a new motherboard to do that down the line). Check out Lucid Hydra if you haven't already.

This may make no difference to you at the moment, but at least you know your cards could both potentially be useful to you down the line. :)
