Well from what i see AVG is not going to be freeware any longer. Good news is i been trying to get my wife on AVast and now i been able to but i hope they don't do what AVG as done.

Prices i do beleave are $35 and $55.

AVG 8 Free is great and includes real time spyware protection too.. :)

it seems to only update once though... per day...on AVG 8.0
or at least on my vista 64bit installation....

When i reboot, it updates at first... then every time i try and maunually update, it just says "update unsuccessfull"...

I stopped using AVG a while ago. Went over to NOD32 and I've swapped everyone in the house over to it.

AVG is good and all, but I got a lot of false positives, and it hogs resources like no ones business.

I find it to be light weight on the PCs here... =/

Have you tried to repair the installation?

Download a file from somewhere and open it, notice how it takes 5 or so seconds before it actually opens, that's because AVG is checking the file for viruses, which is fair enough, but NOD32 does it too and I notice no delay.

Maybe I'm picky lol.

=P I only notice delays on large archives.

Maybe AVG is doing a better job

I have less spyware and viruses now that I've switched to NOD32 than I did with AVG...but the amount of false positives with AVG :shadedshu

no it means they are updating AVG to v8.0 ,simply go and download AVG Free v8.0 :)

im using it atm ,no need to panic hehe

Well thats good news. Still like AVast more than any other. Just don't tell my wife HAHAHA.

Just checked that link and i beleave AVast has these available in free version.

# Safe web surfing, downloading and instant messaging (not available with AVG Free)
# Hacker attacks prevention (not available with AVG Free)
# Phishing and E-Mail scam blocking (not available with AVG Free)

Umm. Maybe your more careful on were you go to these days ?.. Not had a virus my self for over 5 years. When i used to use P2P i used to get virus warnings as AVast will warn you about it before you download the file.

As for spyware \ malware not had any since i started using Outpost Firewall. In fact using that has stoped a hell load of other things a long with it.

I've installed AVG 8.0.1 (Free) on a couple of different machines.
Works great. I just don't like the AVG toolbar, but it's an optional install.

AVG 8 is a resource hog, 7.5 was much better.

Hacker attack??? It's unlikely than any given person will ever fall victim of a direct attack by a hacker, so Windows Firewall and my router's firewall will suffice.

Phishing protection is offered by IE7 and 8, FireFox and Opera.

and AVG 8 Free also gives you a site advisor. =P

If you pratice safe browsing you should never get anything worse than tracking cookies. And if you are fooled by the typo-ridden spam emails from Nigeria then you deserve to have your identity stolen.

I ran the demo of the serve edition. Not sure how well it protects, it kept starting over 500 instances of avg.exe. It made my server close to unresponsive, when restarting it it did the same thing. Not sure what the cause was, though I didn't like it a bit.

I did the same, much less intrusive and NOD32 updates without the big song and dance on start up.

plus nod32 updates are in the kilobytes,
avg is a fair few mb's a day,:shadedshu
incremental updates ftw!

Yeah, because NOD updates hourly sometimes lol.

i guess its probably updated as soon as the nod32 devs find something new.

I know this any you quoted me why lol ?... I don't even get tracking cookie's any more lol.. As for the protection that EI firefox \ Mozilla \ Seamonkey and all the rest of those do not do even 1/2 of what i block. And for the sites that do ads the sites them selfs are blocked not just a cookie.

I run my Vista 64 rig unprotected. I HOPE it gets infected, alas, 3 months with no beans...

Lack of 64-bit viruses really protect you (as well as UAC). But 32-bit programs are still vulnerable.
