I never realised jet fuel is based on paraffin/kerosene. I used to get paraffin from a 5p dispenser as a kid.

I had no idea jet fuel uses lead still. Just read this article and came to see if TPU had a discussion on it... which led me here. Alaska wants to keep lead fuel for planes until 2034.

So why exactly did our society get rid of lead in cars so fast when we realized how dangerous it is, but we don't care that 150,000 airplanes flying daily over our heads is not dangerous, what am I missing?

Not jet fuel, just piston engines in small planes. There is now a lead free version that is just picking up steam. As always our clueless leaders are spouting feces from their faces to create fear and a problem only they can fix.

The current claims as to why it hasn't been replaced yet is that over 50% of leaded airplane traffic is from public services like police, firefighting, ect and that we can't willy nilly leave owners of these piston driven aircraft high and dry. The FAA claims it's a safety measure to continue using what we know works.

Those reasons are complete BS of course, they've had decades to develop an alternative. The only reason there isn't a huge uproar yet is that the effects aren't as acute as every vehicle using lead and often the housing near airports where leaded fuel is in heavy use is low income.

Most Montana airports would disagree woth the low income statement, as would Denver, LAX, and most major airports, which have a tiny amount of piston engine service. Most leaded fuel is sold at small airports, private or on the owners property.

I used Avgas (its blue!) in a truck I owned when it was tuned correctly, it would run 91 Octane but only if the timing was adjusted a lot.

The issue with alternatives like E85 or alcohol based fuels is they can contain moisture and having a fuel line freeze at altitude is a bad option, it's why after every fueling they actually use a clear bottle to drain some fuel out of the tank to check for water.

I am confused

Octane is to delay pre-detonation, so 91 octane in an engine that only needs 87 should not be an issue.

At 12.5:1 Compression I had to run Avgas to have the ignition timing set to make the most power without detonation, with 91 Octane I had to set the timing to about 8 degrees after TDC to prevent and to ensure I wasn't going to blow a ring land off from detonation. Avgas was and still is about $5 more per gallon than pump fuel, so it was worth it since it got a whopping 7MPG, it also was jetted rich to protect the exhaust valves, after a year I had to pull them and have exhaust valves replaced as I cupped one, sodium filled valves ruined my budget for roller rockers.

Ah, I had assumed a truck would have a compression ratio well below 12.5:1
