Hey all,

I finally went out and got BF2 last week, but am having problems already, and EA are being less that helpful, so i wandered if anyone here might have the answer to my problems! :p

While i'm playing, i get random crashes back to the desktop. It only seems to do this while playing online, and it didn't used to do it while playing the demo online. My pc far exceeds the recommended specifications, so i don't think it'l be a hardware issue. I've tried reinstalling, and am using the cat 5.12 drivers. (I don't like 5.13) It does this whether my graphics card is overclocked or not, and atitool is showing no artifacts and default speeds, so it's not my card that is faulty. I also suspected my RAM, but after extensive testing decided it was not. My cpu's running @ 3.85ghz rock stable, after a 12 hour torture test with 2 instances of prime 95 (also stable under same test conditions @ 4.2ghz). It's a fairly fresh installation of XP SP2, which is completely clean of viruses and crap-ware.... Basically i've ran out of ideas.

Any suggestions are welcome, in the mean time i'm gonna do some complaining over at EA for their shite customer service.

Do you have all the patches? Since I go them, the game is much better. I do get the very odd crash to the desktop still though.

-Dan

I tried installing the patches, but after that i can't even open the game. It just comes up with a black screen for a few seconds, and comes back to the desktop

Strange though. Loads of people are having the problems, most with less frequent crashes. But i'd really like to know whats causing it.

EA still aren't being any help

Anyway, thanks djbben.

EA are tards anyways... is DXT Texture formats enabled in CCC? It's under 3D/API Settings, without it on, BF2 wont play, or will crash.

-Dan

Yep, that's enabled.

I'll try installing the patches again. The last time i tried i just installed the latest one, but do i have to install any previous ones before that?

There are 4 patches that I am aware of, and I have all 4. You can get them off this site in the download section, v101, v102, v103, and v1.12. v1.12 is not needed really unless you have BF2SP, but I have it anyways. Your should have the first 3 for game stability and just some updates.

enabling everything in the catalyst control panel (like dxt, alternate pixil center, all tht sht cept force 24-bit depth.... I had same problem)

Ok, cheers. I'll give it a shot in the morning. :respect:

cpu clock

i had the same problem..and it happened when i raised my FBS.i took it down a bit and it runs perfect now...it may work for you...dont know till ya try...:wtf:

hmm, might try. I don't wanna be bringing my system back to default speeds each time i want to play though :( I use 3.85ghz for normal use and 4.1+ghz for audio or video encoding, it's crazy because i still havn't found the maximum possible speed. I chickened out at 4.2ghz.

You might have had the problem because when you raise the fsb, you also speed the ram up. And because the game is so huge, your ram could have screwed up as little as 1 byte of data, and the whole game comes crashing down.

Anyway, i'll give it a shot at default though. I still think it's wierd that the demo that came out before the BF2 final is completely stable, or at least is on my rig.

If you installed BF2 in the default location look here and at the related folders: C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\Support\EA Help\. I had issues with copy protection because of my emulator. I had random crashes when playing and lockups when starting. All it took though was renaming my emulated BF2 disk drive to "D". If you have a crack installed that will also give you problems. It can be frustrating. I have two similar computers. The "better" one had the problems and the slower one has never given me a problem....even overclocked :banghead:.

Yeah, the cd drive i am using it from is already D :( I hate EA!!!!!

I have alcohol 120% installed, and i've heard this can cause problems, but i uninstalled that and reinstalled BF2, but didn't get anywhere, it kept saying 'please insert disk...' so i got tired of that crap and installed the no-cd patch. The only problem i'm having is that i can't install the patches, or when i try to open the game, i get a black screen for a few seconds, and then come back to the desktop

Ya dude it's the protection giving you the issues then. It wasn't having an emulator that gave me problems. It was whenever I tried to use it that the problem started up. As long as you have a legal copy then get rid of the no CD patch. I use daemon tools but none of the options activated other than the disk emulation. I installed all the patches first then enabled the virtual drives and named it "D". My real disc drive was changed to anothr letter. The only other problem I had was the first time I installed the game. I had to go into "My documents" folder and delete the default video settings. That may have been the demo though.

Ahh, this is the same problem I am having. I was beginning to think I had knackered my card installing my AC cooler. I have the original disk and use no emulation although I do have alchol installed. I have checked the error log in CC and it has came up with some info about error with D...... I am slightly confused what do I have to do to solve this? It crashed last night twice in 15 mins then ran fine for 2 hours. Also what is the command for display the fps in BF2?

It cirtainly is very frustrating.

Even after uninstalling alcohol, the same thing happens, so i think perhaps it's a registry entry that bf2's looking for before launching.

i also have had this happen to me also, plays fine. then bam random crash to desktop no error i was looking around the web and i think it has something to do with video card drivers or something not posative tho.

Have you tried 'underclocking' your RAM???? I noticed you have a Pentium CPU, 4x 512MB of RAM installed and a GigaByte mobo (same as myself) The RAM was causing me to get random crashes in BF2 aswell but I solved it by underclocking my RAM from DDR400 to DDR333. BF2 doesnt like 4x sticks of RAM being used for some reason (well it didnt for me) :(

lol, i found the solution to the problem :D

I went and bought my own copy of the game!! LOL

I had a friend's version, which he'd already registered etc, so i got my money back off him, bought the game, and it now works great! I installed the 1.12 patch without problems, and can play 24/7 without a single crash or glitch! :D

Thanks for all the suggestions!

ps: what make is your RAM hookeyStreet? I have 3x Vdata CL5 512mb's and 1x kingston CL4 512mb and that's clocked all the way up to 572mhz @ 4-4-4-10 in dual channel! I was actually really surprised when i found the 3x vdata sticks could keep up with the kingston stick.

heh well i dun think that was the problem u maystill have some random crashes, i read somewhere that BF2 was a memory hog and had problems with some sort of leaks so i went into the paging file and set it to 2gb min and max and havnet had a crash here in a few days so maybe that will help some ppl :toast:

Sorry for long post :D

I've got my pagefile set at 1gig, but i always keep an eye on the task manager, which i have set up on my second monitor, which indicated that the game has never used all my physical memory. Interesting thought though. I'm curious to know whether they've fixed the memory leaks in the 1.12 patch because i've been playing the game every spare minute i get, and no crashes :D

I'm still not entirely sure why it was doing it, maybe EA games detected that i was running a copy that had already been registered. The thing is i used to be able to play offline fine, but if i went online, it would crash every 2 minutes or so.

btw, what servers do you all play on the most? I particularly like the clan asbo server, since they always have someone in to make sure it's played fair, and the connection is awsome! i have a ping of 11 most of the time! I guess the server must be nearby and have a 100mbit connection. It's a 64 player server as well :D

My name is 'GrimReaper-RU-' if anyone kills me, be sure to say hi! :p

Also, i'm investing in an X1900XT shortly :D can't wait! I'm getting it primarily for FEAR because my X800xl seem to handle BF2 fine with all the maximum detail settings, the only thing is i have to turn off dynamic shadows because they're all pixilated. Is this the same for all ATI cards? I've heard it roumoured that the game is designed for nVidia, and dynamic shadows is only supported by their cards.

And 1 last thing, does anyone else get graphical glitches while playing? Like a blade of grass stretching across in front of you, or random strips of sunshine on the ground in foggy maps? I dunno whats causing it. At default clocks on my graphics card, and even underclocked it occours, the temperatures of my card are awsome with my ATI Silencer. And i don't think it's my RAM because there's plenty of overclocking headroom at the clocks i have set.

For normal use:
P4's at 3.85ghz, 14*275mhz, ram running 1:1, 550mhz 4-4-4-10,

when i want a little more speed:
4ghz, 14*286, ram at 572mhz 1:1 4-4-4-10,

when i really need more power i get the 16x multi into play:
4.3ghz, 269*16, ram at 538mhz 1:1 4-4-4-10.

the ram is 4x 512mb, 3x VData CL5, and 1x kingston CL4. To be honest, i'm quite amazed by the overclocking potential of the Vdata stuff, keeping up with the kingston. But i suppose it would be limiting my o/c.
