Public Service Announcement

Beelink
  • Windows preinstalled is pirated.
  • The connectors are clearly flimsy.
  • If you clean install Windows:
    • They don't host drivers on their website. They provide Mega.nz links if you dig for them on their forum.
    • One of the installers in there errors and doesn't work. Oh, yes, it is for the Broadcom 802.11abgn SDIO wireless NIC. In other words, very important, and very not working.
    • I tried my best to get stuff updated but there's probably 6-8 devices in device manager that have problems with drivers or is missing drivers and this is after trying to the stuff from Mega.nz.
    • Of course Windows still isn't activated because it doesn't have a Windows COA to activate it.
  • Powering it off improperly, it refused to give video signal until it was unplugged for several minutes.
  • The side USB2 ports are extremely tight fitting.
  • There's something loose in the box itself that rattles when shaken.
  • To power off the device, have to hold the power button for 9-10 seconds which is ridiculously long.
  • The BIOS are extremely minimalist. Pretty much just boot order and time.
  • It loses time like mad--several minutes per hour likely.

Gearbest
  • Everything is on a perpetual sale.
  • Credit card didn't work. Had to place an order on my credit card via PayPal.
  • Device took 28 days to arrive (shipped directly from China).
  • It took about 10 days for them to get me a new Windows key when I told them the one they gave me was pirated. That "new" key was also pirated.
  • They don't do full refunds unless you ship the product back to them.
  • Chat support doesn't know the return address. Email support does and the damn thing looks like a paragraph.
  • UPS estimated $122.27 USD to return it to them using the cheapest option. I paid less than $90 for it.
  • Their default refund is in "Gearbest points" which, yeah, fuck them.
  • I ultimately got a $10 refund on my PayPal account.

Combined: I'd have to put $100 into the device for legitimate Windows. I paid $90 for it. The device is effectively totaled (costs more to repair than it is worth). On top of that, it would cost me more to get a refund than the refund is worth. It's literally totaled twice: once from the manufacturer (Beelink) and once from the retailer (Gearbest).

Don't do business with either of these people!

Personally, I see anything with an animal name or "best" in the company title and I'm skeptical.

It doesn't matter if it's "AntOnline" at newegg, BeeLink, Gearbest, or ZebraComp, you drop a name like that and I'm instantly scared.

I went into it skeptical and the only reason why I went for it is because their price was about half of everyone else. Now it is obvious why.

I think that Beelink is going to get used as a media server with HDHomeRun Extend doing the transcoding (already confirmed it is recording 1080i content as 540p). Not entirely sure if we're sinking $100 into it for the Windows license yet. I think that will depend on how good PlayOn is. If it is crap, probably going to put OpenSUSE on it (tried Linux Mint and that was a miserable failure).
