Currently on a Sempron 2200 (1.5GHZ) needless to say this is pretty slowwwwwwwww. :(
Whats the best Socket A Processor to buy? surely i have more than a choice of just another sempron that only seems to go up to 2800 (2GHZ)

OK..

The BEST would be an Athlon XP-M 2600+. It runs on considerably lower voltage and is rated at 100C. Therefore, massive headroom for overclocking. Mine ran at 218X12 ~2.6Ghz.

OR..if you are not keen on overclocking anything yet, the highest rated Socket A CPU would be the Athlon XP 3200+ running at 200X11 giving you 2.2Ghz.

Oh really a Athlon XP, isnt that going a bit backwards as a processor? I mean a Athlon 64 would be nice but i thought the XP was old & poor even tho it technically has a faster clock speed then in this case a Sempron

Not really..

can the latest Toyota Corolla out run a MR2? WHich is somewhat my point..

The Sempron core design is adopted from the current Athlon64 and is manufactured in AMD's 130nm process technology. Sure the manufacturing process may be more advanced but it still sports roughly the same features as the older Athlon XPs. The thing that gives new generation XPs the advantage is that is has double the L2 cache of the Semprons. This applies even to the highest rated Sempron CPU, the 3100+ which btw is socket 754.

Increased cache memory allows more information to be stored closer to the processor, leading to greater performance on software applications such as digital content creation, 3-D gaming, media encoding and office productivity. Featuring QuantiSpeed™ Architecture for Rapid Execution of Applications.

The Sempron can somewhat be regarded as AMD's own Celeron, hence it is a budget CPU and can never outperform an Athlon XP.

yea, Athlon XP are better than ('first') semprons ...
but with Semprons 3000+ you have 512kb L2 cache - so i would rather take something like this (if you can't get A-64)

true, but the sempron 3000+ still operates at a stock fsb of 166. Even with a 512K L2 cache, the athlon 3200+ is still better rated

The XP mobile 2600+ I just purchased has 512kb L2 and is unlocked .... check out the project log thread... Wazzledoozle is working with it now ...

Night he could use some suggestions ... he's at 2.6 right now 12x200 .. with the Multi at 13

Actually, ive heard many times that the Socket A Semprons are based on Thouroughbred-B, hence the 333 MHz fsb.
The socket 754 sempron is an Athlon 64 with the 64 bit extensions and some cache disabled.

Imagine if you could softmod a cpu! :D

well yea, i know that; XP had 512 kb L2, but than AMD started with Sempron that had only 256kb L2 ... 'till with 3000+ finally got 512kb L2 back :p

Why dont they still produce XP's?

AMD is focusing now on its Athlon64 architecture.. Production of XPs will cease if i'm not mistaken 2nd - 3rd Q of 2005
