Hello, I recently bought a nice new 4850 from HIS, its working nice and all, but I dont feel i'm getting even close to how well my games could be performing.

I'm kinda wondering what's bottlenecking it the most, I've gotten 9k in 3d mark 2006, using windows Vista 32bit. And WoW is stuttering a bit from time to time which it shouldnt be doing i'd say.

as posted in my system specs, I have 2Gig memory @ 533 Mhz, and would be able to put in Crucial Ballistix @ 667 in, should you people think that would give a massive improvement.

My cheapass mobo has cpu multipliers locked, the fsb is running at 266, which could be turned as high as 300. But would ofc massively influense memory timings/speed.

What would be a not too expensive way to make my system perform better and which bottlenecks it the most right now? My cheap memory or the 2.13Mhz cpu?

tnx in advance for any advice. :respect:

You shouldn't have a bottleneck. Don't know about 3dmark but wow does stutter for me too.

Fill in your entire system specs please, it will really help us help you.

Well you could get a budget overclocking board and relieve the bottleneck or there might be hidden overclocking options on your mobo.

You will need to reformat. The 4850 drivers as posted in another review don't like an old install.

fill in your specs... so we have a better view of what might be causing a possible bottleneck!

also list programs running in the background, as your HDD might be trying to access and offer too much info simultaniously!

btw, welcome to TPU!:toast:

IF THIS IS TRUE.... then they are made to make us suffer!!! :banghead:

Another thing is make sure AVG doesn't automatically scan when your gaming that will kill fps.

Ram is "single" channel... Your memory speed completely sucks!

Does your ram match, is it installed properly for dual channel?

yeah did it, didnt see it was default as not shown. :)

tnx for the welcome :)

I did read that, but its a quite drastic messure isnt it? Also i'm sharing the comp with my gf and she wouldnt be too happy about me reinstalling. I did do an uninstall of the Nvidia 8500GT that was in there before and some reg cleaning stuff with wintools.

I turned the automatics scans off, those take waaay to long. :)

That is what I'm really wondering about, its a prebuild system by Chilligreen my gf bought, I just put the graphics card and the PSU in. I looked inside and it are, be it low budget, 2 identical 1 gig strips. So would that mean the mobo doesnt support dualram? the computer is only like 1.5 years old...

Tnx for all the reply's peeps :toast:

Looking at your motherboards specs on the ASUSTek website, there is no Dual Channel support. You would notice a performance increase with the Ballistix though I think you'd probably benefit more from a Motherboard upgrade first followed by Ram upgrades.

There is Dual Channel support, its so standard by now why bother listing it..

Not sure why your not running dual channel if its matched ram, check your bios settings, that is seriously kicking your butt.

***Read as P5LD2-VM :( read below***

Not to argue, but it specifically states Single Channel on the Asus site. And while I agree it should be supported, I can't find anywhere that it actually says it has it.

Though as Niko suggested the BIOS will tell you for certain one way or another.

Beh your right I read it as P5LD2-VM for some unknown reason... :(

He is right that board is single channel, one of the first release LGA775/ ddr2 boards...

I would thrash that board to the sky and replace it, its seriously hindering your performance.
The e6420 isn't a great chip but plenty quick enough, get a P35/P45 board and some ddr2-800, maybe even clock that chip to 2.66 *almost all do that really easily and its safe on the stock cooler*.

No worries Niko, I orginally read 'P5E..' and wondered how he paired an older system with a deluxe board like the P5E. At any rate I'm pretty sure the Conroes are all great OC'ers so the first step should probably be a new mobo. The prices on them should be dropping fairly soon anyways seeming the pending release of Intel's new chip rendering LGA775 "old". Gotta love computers.

I will not be going Core i7(since i am a gamer), even if the LGA775 socket gets old.

Core i7 is also going to be really expensive when released, if games are going to use Core i7 then i may need to stick to Consoles, i dont have the enough funds to pony up for parts just to get my gaming fix.

this is taken from Wiki...

Many early articles suggest that i7's design is not ideal for gaming performance. In a test done on leaked hardware, a Core i7 940 compared to a QX9770 shows the Core i7 is slower than Yorkfield clock for clock in 2 games while being faster in the other two. Difference in all cases are small

the full i7 wiki article can be found ->here<-

i7 is more or less like any quad (Dual?) core but obviously more up to date. so the same writing on the wall is still there in the form of availability of multi-threaded apps to support quad core. so in reality there is no "IF games are going to use Core i7" if the app uses quad core then it will work on any quad core so long as the chip meats the specific requirements

Indeed i7 is likely to be targeted at servers and professional workstations.

They are keeping the 775s around yet, and making 1136 or something of that sort also with ddr3..

So we will see how it all comes about.

I new mobo and some faster ram should clean you up pretty well.

tnx for al the advice peeps, I will be looking at a cheap OC board then. This stuff all is click on right, cuz i'm not really a hero with soldering and that kinda stuff...

I should just get a overclockable ATX board, and get the fastest memory that goes with it? :)

(any suggestions?)

I mostly use this site to buy my stuff, cuz I can pick it up close to house so no extra costs and easily returnable.

you guys see anything reasonable affordable you like in that list?

they also got clearance sale on a couple of mobo's.

is that Asus P5B a decent clocking board?

out of that list, I would not get anything less than the p5k pro. It's the least expensive p35 chipset board on the list, which is a very good chipset.

btw, nice desktop :D

Look at my Sys Specs...
I don't see how your being bottlenecked as much as I would be. ;-p
and my HD4850 is clocking in at 700Mhz Core, and it will do 2.2Ghz DDR but I keep it at stock until I run into a game that needs more. (CoD4 is the most demanding I have and I run that at 1680x1050, Extra Textures, 4x AA and still get 30-50 FPS, never drops below 27 FPS.)
CPU is kept at 2.25Ghz for the board in my specs and thats what I am basing this on.
