Hey peeps,
My friends PS3 shit yesterday. I know these 60gb models are rare now a days and a lot of people want them because of the backwards compatibility. I wanted to ask if there was anything he could do to fix it.. He doesn't wanna pay 150 for Sony to fix it. Are there any known methods for fixing em? He gets a yellow light when he turns it on and then it beeps and flashes a red light. He was also wondering if anyone would buy a broken 60g. Does anyone know what a fair price would be? :toast:
Thanks for your help peeps. :toast:
Okay so figured out that he is more than likely getting the yellow ring of death.

Before he actually ruins it for good i'd tell him to spend the 150 dollars with the 60gb they usually send you a whole new system, not just a replacement motherboard. You can do the heatgun trick but that will void your warranty,

Tell him to pay Sony the money because it's worth it to keep a working model. Voiding his warranty will just make him sorry.

If they fix it properly he should pay imo. The backwards thing is awesome.

Or you could try selling it or the parts like the HD and use it to buy the New Slim which is much better designed.

There are tons of fix out there so you could risk doing it yourself.

Or buy an new PS3 Phat and replace it with the broken one and then return it for your money back.

Thanks for your opinions guys.. I don't think he can actually get it fixed though.. he may be past warranty. Do they send you a refurbished 60 or a brand new one?

Its a brand new one

this happened to me back in Jan and i paid and got sent a new new one, and its been working great, its also going to be louder because the fans kick in much sooner so it doesn't overheat

You can still have Sony repair the model even if it's past warranty, and they repair your model. It's a good service.

He can send it to Sony to get fixed, he just has to pay for the repairs. If he wants to keep PS2 compatibility, his only options are to have the unit repaired, or buy a used 60GB model. No new models allow you to play PS2 games.

I am keeping my 60GB model forever, or at least until Sony sees fit to bring back PS2 and Linux capabilities.

Well I would fix it and then sell it, cause they are going for a lot of money right now.. but I guess he just wants a slim.. so look forward to a for sale post on a broken 60gb model lol.

So he doesn't want to be able to play PS2 games or install linux? Then yeah, a slim is a good buy.

lol yeah. I'm trying to talk him out of it.

Well there is rumor floating around that Sony is planning on releasing a PS2 emulator for the slim eventually to compete with digital downloads for 360. ;)

That rumor is false. It's not in their plans.

So anyone know what price to sell a broken 60 gig at??

Well in this case it is still considered a rumor, but a PDF from sony to sega with plans on releasing Dreamcast games (which i cannot wait until this happens), and a PS2 emulator and the ability to play import games you download from PSN. I still call it a rumor because it hasn't happened yet.

I never said it was true OR false, i was just implying it hasn't been confirmed false as of yet. When he said "That rumor was false" i am assuming he was talking about at the end of august when Sony said they did not plan on releasing an emulator for the PS3 to play PS2 games. Leave it to Sony to stir up the Rumormill

Even if they do release an emulator, that "leak" seems to suggest it will be for downloaded games only. That's not what I consider PS2 compatibility.

i'd say price it at about 125-150 i mean that way someone can get it repaired from sony (as long as the warranty sticker is in tact)
