Hello there, we recently acquired Mediacom Digital Cable which of course came also included their Internet Deal 12MB connection. with that, i am trying to refresh my memory here. i have a D-Link 524 Wireless Router but from what i remember it's important to only have one device set to DHCP and the other set as Wireless Access Point/Switch Port. currently, i think they are both set as DHCP. i never messed with the Router so it's set as Default right now and man... i cannot watch a youtube Video or any other video around the net. takes forever to buffer. anywho, i will try a direct link to the computer that's upstairs and see if the Router is the issue which i'm sure it is cause two devices set as DHCP doesn't mix.

So steps to do:

A: Try Direct Link and see if the speed issue goes away

B: If issue is related to Router then set Router to Access point/Switch Port

You can also go to speedtest.net and test your throughput. You don't need the router and the modem both handing out IP's.

i've done the speed test and all is fine in most areas 12MB and a little over. right now i am having a hard time with this D-link Router. here are the steps i have tried

-Hard Reset both Router and Cable Modem
-Direct Linked (Cord Linked in Regular Port and NOT WAN Port) to Router and Disabled DHCP Static IP and DHCP Server
-Plugged in cable Modem to 4th port and Computer to 3rd Port and my computer 2nd Port

Issue: computer upstairs gets Internet Access and i don't. what's the deal?

also, do i have to contact Mediacom cause... i can't access the setup in the cable modem when i've checked the default IP and still no go. if i am doing something wrong then please.... let me know

Having dhcp on both isnt a bad thing, its more or less not required. If you have the wireless connected to the modem via its WAN port, the wireless router effective creates its own network which it will then need to provide DHCP addressing. Now I assume the computer upstairs is wired in, but to which device? And your computer connects via wireless? And you cannot access the setup page for the modem device? is that correct? Is the modem just a modem or is does it have the router functionalities as well? Maybe draw up a quick diagram to show what you're trying to do.

ARRIS Cable Modem Model:TM502G [Linked] to 4th Port via Router and Upstairs Computer [Linked] to 3rd port via Router. the Cable Modem is just your standard Cable Modem from any ISP.

i have the Router setup as an Access Point. now when i go and connect my computer (Downstairs) into port 2 there is no Internet connection or anyway for me to even access the Router via IP. Router here is a D-Link Model: DI-524.

main reason why i tried this is because as described in post#1 videos would take forever!!! to buffer. i would expect more from a 12MB Connection. i though having DHCP Enabled on the Router had something to do with the slow connection. maybe a conflict somewhere

UPDATE: now when i have the Cable Modem plugged in to WAN Port, nothing happens. no Internet Access

Ok with the modem plugged into port 3, and the desktop into port 2, try setting a static IP on the desktop plugged into port 2. Make sure to set it on the same network as the other devices and see if you can access the router/internet.

Now when you connected the modem to the wan port, and nothing happens, if you have dhcp turned off on the router, no one will have the proper ip address information to reach the internet. So when doing this setup, turn dhcp, and nat back on so they can get the proper ip information. And your WAN port should be set to DHCP, so it will receive an address from the modem.

Im assuming by ordinary modem that it does give internal ip addresses: ie 192.168.x.x.

meh, bought a new router. the old router was trash

ok same thing seems to be happening here. the my connection will max out @270kbps when i would get like 700kbps-1.2MB sometimes. i am not sure what is causing this. any suggestions? i have tried release/renew'ing a new ip via the WRT120N Setup and tried rebooting the Router also. should i try switching the router to a Access Point or does that even matter?

is this occuring on wired connections as well as wireless?

all connections are wired except for the Wii
