I'd say you definitely want a heatsink on there. I can't find a TDP for it, but since the iGPU and memory controller are on it, it's probably enough to need cooling.

Some nForce2 boards even had fans on the northbridge.

How about a adhesive thermal pad and use what you have?

68 olds say glue it on and put thermal compound on the middle. It is just a shame that dont sell the clips i want. :(Would a pad be enough to hold it on there.Sounds a good idea if it hold it on.It is just a shame the other heatsink off the other board is smaller.I will give that a try, thanks

I have seen thouse tiny fans on boards. In fact i had one by PC Chips sad;y to say that was boxed but D.OA :(Mind you it was only a fiver and had all the bits you get with motherboards.:)

How about a adhesive thermal pad and use what you have?
Is this what i need?

x 25mm x 25mm THERMAL HEATSINK TRANSFER PAD DOUBLE SIDED SELF ADHESIVE TAPE ?

Don't see a link, but likely most (thin as possible) double sided adhesive thermal tape/pad would work. You can use scissors or a razor blade to eliminate the excess. A case fan blowing across that mb would be a great addition.

I agree, that's probably a cleaner solution than my old school ghetto super glue & thermal paste method.

Yes, as the others said, definately use a heatsink, and probably a fan too.
nForce2 got pretty hot, not as much as nForce 3 or 4, but still pretty hot.

I lapped my nForce2 back in the day, and put a Swiftech MCX159 on it.
Worked really really well, it overclocked like hell :)

Edit : Which heatsink fell off ? the Blue One or the other one ?

I wouldn't use Thermal pads, they arent very efficient, and you need some pressure to get a good thermal transfer.
Thermal adhesive might do the job, but you've only got one chance to get it right, its an epoxy glue.
If there are holes through the board, try and get some of the plastic standoff things to go through the holes, that would hold it on enough...they should be pretty cheap to find.

Sooooo yeah. You want to keep nForce thermals under control. I have a factory issue heatsink, 120mm at half speed blowing air over it and an 80mm at half speed delivering crossflow. This is what I get to deal with:

Biostar boards have some of the most overclocker unfriendly controls but some of the best thermal behaviors. I sometimes wonder if these properties can be cheesed with a TEC.

Can you or anyone else on here give me a link to what would be the best pads to get.i am confused by it all o_O

If you have the chutzpah, i'd go Thermal adhesive, but put a book on it to keep pressure on it while its curing.
Otherwise you can find small heatsinks on ebay like this 40mm heatsink but 100% you'll need a fan.
I would have put a fan on that large heatsink anyway, it would have gotten pretty hot, it needs airflow.

I have never hearsd of Churzpah o_Oi looked it up so i know it now.:)

Th blue one .I have the plastic standoffs the thing i am missing is one of the clip,s for the stand off s to put in the motherboard.

You can't make plastic washers with nuts and screws work?

Or is it offset?

i'd just use thermalpaste and two zipties.

edit add: just in case were still debating on if you need a heatsink on nForce2 - yes you do. nForce2 without heatsink is good way to = dead ;p
bonus is yours is one of the versions that has the metal "slug" in the package - so ... they wouldn't bother with that if they didn't want the heat to go somewhere else...

some revisions didn't have the metal inlay, but i don't know if those were newer/later or die shrink or something. I'm probably totally off on that. anyway...

Your cooler really reminds me of an old zalman chipset cooler, remember them being in both yellow/gold and blue.

Looking on ebay found some hits under "Zalman Nb47j Fanless Northbridge Chipset Cooler"

That at least gives a possible model name to maybe look for ZM-NB47J clips possibly?

It's nForce, not some Centaur7-derived VIA chipset. Yes, it *needs* a heatsink.

I'm not sure how much 'stuff' you have in your collection / bad parts' bin but, you'd be surprised how much inter-compatibility in little stuff there was back in the day.
Personally, I'd scav. your old parts (dead GPUs included) and see what you have on hand to (re)use.
If you're careful and lucky, those pop-thru spring-retainers can be re-used, too. Alternatively (as 'jank' as it is) zipties can be used to retain the heatsink.

Lastly, If you've got calipers ($6-21 @ HarborFreightTools in US) you can measure the mounting pitch, to order 'the correctly mounting' generic heatsink (for $7-20).

I am missing one of the clips to put the plastic bit iin the motherboard :(
Maybe you can get some new clips from ebay or some thing, and that would save you from buying some thing like Arctic Alumina thermal adhesive.

Or yea hardware store and some fiddling?

EDIT - sorry realized OP is in UK so would need to check that version of ebay.
okay yea ebay UK zero hits =(

mind you just looking on ebay seems you can get the entire heatsink new old stock about $20 which surprises me considering how long ago that was.
Generic ebay search for ZM-NB47J
