i have a most likely odd question.

Is it possible to use a CB radio like a Cell phone?

Like maybe have a base station at your apt. that is connected to a land line and you punch the numbers into the CB in your truck or on the hand held and if you are in range, it routes through the landline?

I'm trying to get away from the $50/month basic cell phone plan w/o internet.

I figure with the potential range of the CB w/ antenna attachments and such, it might work. Any ideas?

I ahve considered a go phone but the coverage is not as good. Also, i would generally spend the same per month anyways. i live in Mississippi where there are very few large buildings. unless i go to jackson or something.

Nope. CB is a frequency band and is limited to that band. It works more like a radio than a telephone. Best bet is to get a pre-paid cell phone or buy a better plan.

Get rid of the cell phone all together.

I did, will NEVER buy another for myself.

the main prblem with that approach is that in Mississippi there is a clear monopoly going on. The cheaper companies are not here. the options are Verizon (best coverage), Cellsouth/CSpire ( cheapest but crappy coverage), and AT+T (crappy coverage, slow data, and high price)

That's about the same here in WI, KRD. You get just a phone for about $50/mo.

The Cobra 29 LTD BT can make and receive phone calls, but you will still need an account.

Here, you cna get a phone number, and be able to call one number only, for $7. Minimum credit you can buy is $10, leaves $3 for $0.30-per minute calling. The more you pay, the cheaper the minutes.

Surprised this is not also available...

You can only call one number? :wtf:

apparently after some diggin into the FCC rules for CBs, i discovered that using a phone patch to connect a radio to a phone and making calls is permitted. So, i just need to find out how.

**Edit

Someone suggsted using a Linux Asterisk setup. not sure how that would work though
