Does anyone know what these chips are behind the GPU? I would like to install a few RAM heat sinks on these to keep them cool, since they do run pretty hot. I have looked everywhere but I can not find a satisfying answer. Thanks!

Just extra voltage regulators.
 
They're bypass capacitors, they help stabilize the voltage at the chip. No need to heatsink them, they aren't sensetive to heat, and they're probably only getting hot from the heat of the die on the other side of the pcb :)

Edit: I was wrong, see w1z's post below. What I said only applies to the smaller brown SMD parts, I didn't realize the larger ones were rectifier diodes.

I'm not surprises it's running hot because of the GPU at the bottom with a makeshift cooling solution...LOL! :p
 
Actually, for those of you wondering, the GPU runs fairly well after installing this temporary cooler. It never goes above 79c, it stays pretty silent, and it's turbo boost is more stable than it was with old stock cooler. And yes, zip ties do work if you know what you are doing. Of course, this is not for everyone, and you might as well put your graphics card away or run with your integrated GPU if your fan goes bad until you have a more suitable solution. If you are interested in learning how you can do this effectively, let me know and I can try and explain the do's and don't's about it. A GTX 760 I had in my old pc ran for 2 years with a zip tie mounted cooler until I got a Accelero Mono on it. Cheers!

These are SMD rectifier diodes.

Google Image search "SMD rectifier diodes" to confirm :)

They just get hot from thermal convection from the GPU through the solder, through the pins. Not worth cooling, they are usually rated for 150 to 175°C

This is my mod for when a GPU fan goes bad. You can do this with a stock Intel CPU cooler also or another GPU heat sink with proper clearance using zip ties.

Well you get an A+ for having that HUGE Heat sink on it!!!!

Also you see those rectifiers on lap top CPU sockets, they clean up the signal.

hehe relatively easy and it works! not the most aesthetically pleasing sight on the back of PCB but then again I do not have a window on the case this card is in, so the old GTX 970 can perform freely without being shy :)
