Im running vista 64 bit and everytime i try to play COD multiplayer on steam it gets an APP crash? any ideas

i have to 'fix' that problem maybe 4-5 times a month...


summary:

CoD4 assumes that if you have an audio output, you have an input.

Under vista/7, the OS uses hotplug detection on HD audio devices, and disables any ports that arent in use.

Cod4 therefore sees an audio out, assumes there is an input, and crashes when attempting to load a non-existent input device (the microphone) and crashes when loading the voice chat portion of the MP game.
