OK first I start eith thanks. I built my first system recently with a bit of help from this forum. System is nothing to brag about but I built it on a budget of 400.00. Anyhow no it is time to upgrade my notebook and I have no idea whwere to begin. With out looking I know it is a compaq presario 2100. I beleive it has an amd processor but which one at this point I have no idea(more to follow later). This machine is about 4.5 years old and I bought it new before I had any pc knowledge other than using the internet. What board and processor shouldf I look for? And How the hell do I take it apart to begin? Thanx again in advance...

You can't upgrade a laptop like you can with a desktop, but there's a number of things.

Easiest is RAM - how much do you have? I'd upgrade to 512mb as a bare minimum. There's a cover on the bottom which you remove to get to the RAM slots. Pretty simple and if you have 256mb it'll make a HUGE difference.

I'm pretty sure the Presario series have Intel Pentium M processors. You can upgrade this to a faster one but it's a pretty tricky thing to do without a service manual. Also, it's hard to tell if a faster one will work - best thing is to fit the fastest one it could have been fitted with when you bought it.

You could also stick a bigger HD in if you're running out of space. There's going to be a caddy which slides out with the HD in it - nice and straightforward.
